Is Bruce Pearl the most over rated SEC CBB Coach?

Tennessee fans were all over him. But he never stood out to me. He had one good season with a SEC Reg Season Title but that's it. Going to a NCAA Tournament every year was impressive. But I never considered him an elite coach.
I felt Cuonzo Martin would've been great if UT fans didn't drive him away by always bringing up Pearl.
And now at Auburn the ESPN Commentators gave him all of this hype. But ultimately fell short again.
There's no comparison to Johnny Jones. Aight? But I'm personally tired of hearing about Bruce Pearl as if he's an elite SEC Coach. He's not.

Hell no. Auburn basketball is just a place you can't win at.
He won a D II National Title, took Milwaukee to the Sweet 16, and gave us our best run ever in men's basketball.
And it was more than one good year at UT. We were a perennial top five seed type team. Hell, we were a two seed twice in six years. We only made the Elite Eight once, so he's not the best tournament coach, but I'd give anything to have those days back.

He benefitted greatly at Tennessee from inheriting a very good roster and having excellent assistants. At Auburn he had/has neither of those things.
I never felt he was the best developer of talent or in game coach. Inheriting such a good situation allowed his personality to kind of take over which enabled him to build a cult like following among a lot of Tennessee fans.
I think the magic was starting to wear off at the end though. His worst year at Tennessee was his last and he had two top 5 overall recruits on his roster (Tobias Harris #5 player in 10 class and Scotty Hopson #5 player in 08 class).
He had somewhat of a fluke run in the tourney in that 09-10 season (lucky shot to beat Kawhi's SDSU team/Ohio upsets Greg Monroes GTown team/Good win over Ohio State in S16/questionable coaching in E8 game against Michigan State) after Tyler Smith got kicked off but other than that his last 3 years were horrid when you consider the talent he had.
I know he is recruiting at about that same level at Auburn but I would be surprised if he ever makes a true run as bad as he is on the bench. His half court offense is pretty rough and I think he gets outschemed night in and night out.
Also Cuonzo is horrid. Talk about a fluke run. This is year 9 of his coaching career and his last month at Tennessee is his only accomplishment.

Bruce is good, but he's overrated by Vols fans for sure. Horrific treatment of the basketball program has deluded the fan base into thinking that only one coach could win here. To a lesser extent, this applies to football as well.

He drove himself away by sucking for two and a half years. The fan base gave him every chance.
To be fair, he inherited a bad roster, but nobody made the team half arse it until January each year.

Completely ignored in your post is that Bruce's press has been completely neutered by new rules and emphasis
Bruce struggles in game and his half court sets can be annoying, but he offset it with his press for sure. Without it, it is easy to see us struggle

He's an incredible recruiter. Anybody's who can bring that kind of basketball talent to Auburn is elite in that regard. He apprently is not such a great game day coach

True, but playing on Wednesday all three years in the SEC tournament and not even an NIT bid?

He hasn't won much, but gets a lot of attention for some reason.

Cal fans will be racist as well since he's sucking out there too. His brand of basketball is unwatchable.

Well if you're a collegiate basketball coach, and your team has the ball with 53 seconds left and only gets one possession AND you keep a TO in your back pocket, you're probably not great.

This.
He had ZERO losing seasons before taking the Auburn job. Now he has three

Bruce would kill it at LSU IMO.

Being a coach has more than one aspect, and some guys are great at part of their job, and not nearly as good as they are.
Pearl is a guy that's an outstanding recruiter, with a well-deserved reputation for pulling in talent that doesn't normally go where he has been-- that said, that is tarnished by the penalties in that phase, for his misconduct.
Game day, he's about league average in a league without a lot of elite in game coaches. As a teacher, he's probably juuust a little above average. As an organizer who fixes existing system inefficiencies simply by showing up and getting everyone on the same page, he's pretty decent.
All in all, a mixed bag. He'd be a great hire for a name program that is in disarray because the existing administration had lost control of/direction of the players, but if you are looking for someone to turn your program around, it will require a very narrow set of circumstances to get there with Pearl.

Thought for sure in year 3 Auburn would make that leap but they just didn't. Year 4 should be it for him, no excuses for next season. Has to win.

ESPN always talks up their former employees. Avery has gotten a lot of good coverage and extra face time on the network because of it also.

Pearl chose to stop pressing on his own at Tennessee because he was flaming out in the tourney.

He had one minor violation, the only reason he was punished as bad as he was is because he lied about it when asked
