Is Bama's defense good enough to carry their team?

Seems odd that everyone assumes Alabama doesnt need good QB play to win championships. Look at LSU. They had the best defense in the SEC last year and lost five games because of poor QB play. Whats to say Bama wont do the same this year? Especially with a poor pass protecting OL. And dont tell me because of the surrounding talent. LSU is loaded with talent and got shut out by Arkansas.

The first flaw in your argument is comparing us to LSU.

Front 7 is legit, secondary could be, but we have to see it in action.

All I know is JK Scott will be pinning teams deep and if the D is as good as advertised, only a select few teams should be able to find a lot of success. Barring good field position from TOs or big returns.

Well we don't really know if it'll be a good pass protecting OL or not. C-Rob and Kelly are good pass protectors. Piersbacher might be, we have to see. At RG Taylor seems to have taken over, not too sure on his pass pro abilities. Dom Jackson though probably won't be too good in pass pro.

But the three guys from middle to left should be ok. The right side is the question mark in terms of pass pro.

yes
but the offense will be fine.
lsu lost 5 games because they werent physical, had average def front 7, and threw in the towel after the loss to bama. putting the losses on the offense is a Who-fan copout.

No they didn't have the best defense in the SEC (and this seems to be the point of this post, to make this claim) and frankly, they were not a very good team...hence 5 losses that could have been 7 losses. Any team with an above average OL pushed LSU around pretty good, and their LBs couldn't cover or anticipate very well.

That "best defense in the SEC" is a progressively inflated talking point from the LSU board... Like much that is repeated and repeated over there it is just circular-think and just isn't true.

lost 5 gamse because of poor QB play

Another LSU board talking point that seems to have taken root. Poor QB play did not cause LSU to get slaughtered by State, Auburn, shutout and dominated by Arkansas, lose to Alabama at home, and get their line blown 5 yards off the ball every snap against N.D. That required more than bad QB play...

You do realize that it took OT for Bama to win against LSU right? Or that barring a missed FG, Xtra point or turnover on goal line, Alabama loses to Arkansas last year...etc.

Dont get me wrong, Bama had a great season last year even losing two games, but it could have easily been four loses.

Well they did lead the SEC in Total Defense last season, and were second in Scoring Defense.

Yup. Going into last year I think a lot expected as close to a rebuilding year as you can get at Bama under Saban. This year was the target for the next title. We over achieved last season. I hate those nail biters. That's why I preferred the 2011 Bama season to the 09 season. In 2009 Bama was unbeaten, but could have lost a few. In 2011 they did lose one, but they had wins over every team on the schedule by at least 16 points.

But yeah, Bama over achieved last year. It was good to see the team play with heart in those close ones though.

If you follow LSU you know that one middle linebacker changed them from a week front 7 to very physical up the middle. Problem is that Auburn and State had already laid the pipe before that.

Well, since most of your team from 2014 is gone, not a whole lot

No doubt. I think going HUNH saved Bama last year with a mobile QB in Sims. Not sure if Coker/Morris can produce on the same level

Their defense may be as talented as it's been since 2011. Kiffin got their offense humming last year. They'll be fine as long as they can find a consistent threat outside and their QB isn't a turnover machine.

Well, keep telling yourself this and maybe it will become true. Talent is strictly a comparable term and LSU does not have a measurable talent edge on any team in the SEC west. Not State, not A&M, and certainly not Alabama, Arkansas, Ole Miss or Auburn.

I suggest studying the other teams talent, not your own. IT might work out well for LSU, schedule sets up nicely... but for now, the unknowns at QB, OL, DL, DE, LB, even WR (dropped more balls than they caught last year... not that there were many catchable balls thrown) make LSU's season a big question mark...at least to me. Hope they turn out well though...

Alabama may be in much the same situation... but with about 6 former 5 star recruits moving into starting roles, they actually MAY have a talent edge.
