All Access - Saban & Alabama Football
I'm sure it does haunt him to see a kid who was there and he thought had "gotten it" and was flourishing decide that he wanted to go finish somewhere else. Probably a bit of a kick to the nuts.

But the part that eats at Saban is that Smith felt it wasn't in his best interests to finish his career at Alabama.
"The thing I lose sleep over the most is not winning and losing the games. It's about players. It's about a guy who's not doing the right thing or somebody you're trying to get to see the light and buy into doing the right things," Saban says. "I've been coaching for 43 years, and to have what happened with Maurice Smith and his family, that's what I lose sleep over. We've got 53 players in the NFL and a whole bunch of other ones who aren't in the NFL and are very successful. But what I lay awake at night and think about is where did I fail a guy like Maurice Smith. What didn't I do, or what could I have done better?"

It's hard for me, personally to argue against this. When UGA wanted Smart to come here as DC, Saban advised him to stay until he got THE job....a HC job. It worked out to be good advice for Kirby.

not sure I buy that. I'm not saying Saban isn't ALSO bothered by the other, but he's far too competitive a person and perfectionist not to have wins and losses bother him just as much.

Yea I agree, that's one of those things everyone says. He loses the most sleep over losing. But I bet this sort of thing is a pretty close 2nd. It's basically a flat out rejection.

This is what you call a Hail Mary to try and save face. The trashing of his locker, if it in fact happened is a joke. No program should allow that behavior.

I don't really see how that is even something to save face. It's just explaining how it feels in that situation. It isn't some sort of "look how good I am" type thing.

lol sure Nicky sure....
it was really helpful to have a subordinate clean out his locker after you ordered the code red
but yah you dont sleep well at night in your mansion.

I never said it was. But for him to allow Black to transfer and try and block Smith is a joke.
Plus, the locker thing. I believe that Saban wants what is best for his players. But if a kid wants to leave then get out of the way and let him leave.

He didn't allow Black to transfer - it slipped through the cracks.

Maybe, but that isn't really what this is about. It's about why he wanted to go, not whether he should be able to.

Haha, please tell me you don't actually believe this.

Why he wanted to go? He wanted playing time. He wasnt going to get that at Bama. He graduated, if Saban claims to care so much about his players he should have been proud of Smith. Instead of ordering the Code Red like the other person stated.

Bull shite on that. The kid wasn't happy and wanted to leave so let him go. Saban is a narcissist and an egomaniac. He only cares about himself and his image aight.

He's literally playing the same role at UGA that he was slotted to play at Alabama : nickel. He will see almost exactly the same number of snaps at the same position at UGA. So no, it wasn't playing time. If it was that simple I doubt Saban would have the same reaction of trying to figure out why Smith wanted out and wanted to go somewhere where he will do the same thing.

Smells like damage control.

According to the rest of the Bama posters on here, he had been passed on the Depth Chart.

Is Saban a damage control person?
Maybe it is - I thought it was interesting because I could totally see the part of this that digs at him being the fact that he was totally off on one of his players and why a kid, who wasn't running away due to PT or some other thing, would purposely choose another program to do the exact same thing he would be doing at Alabama. It makes sense that a guy like Saban would have that stick in his crawl. Not that Mo Smith made the wrong decision at all, but that type of situation would make a guy sit back and try and figure out WTH would cause it and how do I fix it.

You have the wrong transfer. That's K. Sheffield, the sophomore who just left yesterday.

They claimed the same for Smith.

I think it is all about balance. He cares about what happens to the kids but he will also cut them loose if they aren't getting it done, whether they are trying or not. He does have obligations to the kids but he also has obligations to the team as a whole and the school. He makes a lot of money to win games.
