I haven't really kept up with the story as Ole Miss wasn't a school or team on my radar. I remember the whole Tunsil - bong video that appeared on the day of the NFL Draft.

Was that the catalyst?

1.) Was Ole Miss paying players?
2.) What does Houston Nutt, a former coach, have to do with all this? How is he even involved?
3.) Escort services - were they for Freeze or was Freeze getting them for the players or recruits?
4.) In all seriousness, what is Ole Miss looking at? Bowl bands? Loss of scholarships?

Ole Miss paid players, Tunsil admitted it on draft night in the most amazing fashion ever

Freeze called reporters to blame Nutt for the NCAA issues, and Nutt sued Ole Miss

We don't know who the escorts were for yet

Ole Miss is getting the practical DP. They'll get hit with big scholly losses and more bowl ban, most likely. It'll be an unattractive job for any serious coach for at least another season, probably longer. Will require total rebuild at that point.

What's interesting is that the dumbasses at Ole Miss are still sticking to the "Hugh did everything right in compliance" argument, which is laughably false. That narrative makes me think the escort stuff does touch on the NCAA stuff, and that as a result, they're in the difficult position of being unable to throw Hugh under the bus for the NCAA stuff.

1.) Was Ole Miss paying players?
Just the Assistant AD arranging meetings with boosters to get them paid.

2.) What does Houston Nutt, a former coach, have to do with all this? How is he even involved?
He has a lawsuit for defamation b/c ole miss said all their woes in the 1st NOA were on his watch which apparently it wasn't true. All he wanted was a public apology. Ole miss did not deliver.

3.) Escort services - were they for Freeze or was Freeze getting them for the players or recruits?
The MILLION dollar question.

4.) In all seriousness, what is Ole Miss looking at? Bowl bands? Loss of scholarships?
All of the above and then some.

Basically, Ole Miss tried to bust a Nutt, and it blew all over their faces.

I don't know about powerhouse

But I think it's a solid fit and would provide the stability they'd want after the smoke clears from the demolition

Bowl bands?

Unfortunately, yes. It's looking like they're only going to be allowed to send their band to bowl games for the next 4-5 years.

Also it was Nutt's lawyer who discovered the escort call when reviewing Hugh's phone records from January 2016

If it's found out the Ole Miss administration had a part in this trying to cover it up it will be a gigantic penalty. I don't think we'll ever see the SMU death penalty again though.

Here's the NUTTshell

Ole Miss is at the end of a very lengthy NCAA case. They have self imposed a bowl ban and scholarship reductions, and are facing the "Lack of Institutional Control" that will most definitely make the penalties severe.

Prior to the 2016 recruiting class, Hugh Freeze and Ole Miss apparently orchestrated a campaign of disinformation about the NCAA case. "This is all the previous coach's fault" was the theme. The previous coach was Houston Nutt.

When the actual allegations came out, it was found that the vast majority (IIRC 15 of 18) off the allegations were under Freeze, not Nutt.

Nutt hired the former general counsel for Wal Mart, and filed a FOIA request for Freeze's phone records. Then he filed a federal lawsuit against Freeze and Ole Miss alleging that this disinformation campaign cost him opportunities for a new job.

One of the phone calls was to a Tampa-area escort agency. It was a one minute phone call, he was in Tampa recruiting at the time. It was first dismissed as a wrong number, but after Ole Miss looked into it, they felt that there was a pattern of phone calls that resulted in his termination/resignation.

Ole Miss still has to face the NCAA in the coming months.

Probably, but this isn't this issue in the Freeze stuff from yesterday.

They initially blamed him for the vast majority of the violations publicly. Turns out that wasn't true. He had an anti-defamation clause as part of his buy out and asked for an apology from Ole Miss. They refused, he sued them for defamation.

We don't know exactly. Stay tuned.
