Atheist Organization asks Auburn to remove team chaplain
Auburn's statement
Note: I would be equally against a team being FORCED to have a chaplain if they didn't want one. It's completely voluntary to the program... land of the free.
There's a painting out there of Bama and Auburn joint team prayer after an iron bowl. I can't find it, so here's the next best thing.
quote:
A national organization focused on the separation of church and state has requested Auburn University to "abolish the chaplaincy" working inside the doors of its athletics department, calling the chaplain's presence unconstitutional
Auburn's statement
quote:
"Chaplains are common in many public institutions, including the US Congress. The football team chaplain isn't an Auburn employee, and participation in activities he leads are voluntary."
Note: I would be equally against a team being FORCED to have a chaplain if they didn't want one. It's completely voluntary to the program... land of the free.

Eh, I'm an atheist but I don't see what the big deal is. There are bigger fish to fry than having a chaplain on campus. Like evangelists using non-profit status to pay for mansions and private jets to vacation all over the world.

Shocking, socially awkward atheists found a reason to get pissed about football players praying. We have become a nation of offended pussies.
Donald Trump may be a clown sometimes, but I get why people like him. They're sick of this shite.

You know that's quite rare, right? I would never go to a church with a millionaire pastor. My 5 point Calvinist belief tells me that's a poor use of the resources God provided.

Unless the prayer is forced AU should tell them to frick off

Although the forefathers were basically all Freemasons and Deists and not Christians, they still didn't write that in.

Yeah it's rare but it still happens.
I think the worry is that the university is giving funding to have a campus chaplain for one religion but not others. Ideally you'd want to be fair and have a chaplain for each major religion. But then it's a question of where to draw the line, how many followers does a religion have to be to get campus funding?
There are two fair ways:
Every religion has a campus chaplain (may not be feasible)
No religion has a campus chaplain
But again, I doubt it costs much at all (if anything) for the chaplain. It doesn't bother me, just wanted to state the argument more clearly.

He's not an AU employee. Either he donates his time or he's privately funded. His activity has no impact on a single person unless they choose so. Folks need to mind their own business IMO.

Yeah I figured the chaplain was volunteer, just didn't know if they had a chapel. Like I said, this is small potatoes (or no potatoes).

But it is in countless supreme court decisions making it case law, thus law of this land #feloned
