At least the SEC decided to make every league member play one game per year -- if possible -- against a school from another Power Five league. And it followed the Big Ten's lead in forbidding games against FCS foes, too.
Wait. What? The SEC didn't nix FCS games?
Nope. So if you're a fan of cupcakes, Missouri athletic director Mike Alden has good news for you:

"As far as the SEC is concerned, the commissioner (Mike Slive) has indicated to us that all of us take a look at having at least one of those non-conference games being against one of the other four conferences. Then the other games, his encouragement to all of us is with the college football playoff being out there and scheduling being important, you want to be cognizant of that. But there have been no discussions about no longer playing FCS opponents. And for us, and I think many of us in the SEC, we see those as important. They're important for us, and they're important for college football, too. They're good for us, and good for the FCS opponent."
Oh, yes, they're important for college football and for the FCS opponent. Really, guys like Alden should be praised for reaching out a helping hand to the little man. Someone get John Mellencamp on the phone to write a song about it.
Please.

Honestly some of the top FCS teams are better than some of the shittier FBS teams... At the end of the day, any SEC team should beat these schools. It's not about how bad the bad is, its about how good the good is when it comes to OOC scheduling.

Ya god forbid the big schools help out the little schools with money. You realize a lot of the smaller FCS schools don't have sports revenue outside of these games right?

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Playing a 1AA school isn't the end of the world. Every team needs a tune up game and those schools need to fund their athletic depts.
Mizzou at least played a respectable one this year. It's not like when FSU played Savannah St. You could put together a team of posters from this board and beat Savannah St.

I would regular schedule (and pay) Samford or Alabama State than play like Buffalo or Idaho (No offense Florida). As an Auburn fan, we are just as likely to win those games but at least we are supporting an in state school in the process

My alma mater is playing Sam Houston State this weekend. It's a joke.
Are we playing them to be charitable? No.
We are quite literally renting a win. I guess Houston or Rice are no longer available. Personally, I liked it when Skip scheduled mostly in state schools so at least the charity stayed in state.
It is what it is.
I just thought the Mr. SEC piece was interesting for taking a different spin on Alden's comments than had mostly been discussed here this week (razzing Mizzou about traveling to bottom feeder conference home stadiums).

That's why USC and Clemson both play one FCS team per calendar year, and always a team from South Carolina. We both rotate through Wofford, Furman, SC State, The Citadel, and Coastal Carolina as a way to keep that athletic payout in the state and help prop up those athletic departments. I don't have a problem with that, at all.

Sam Houston St is a better team than a lot of the 1A schools LSU could be playing. They aren't too far removed from back to back title game appearances.

A no FCS rule is a good place to start. Some schools are required to by law, other than that nobody should.

True.
I'd be happy if we just went to a 9 game conference slate.
Pac 12 has been playing 9 game schedules for a while and they aren't going bankrupt. They make up for it by charging more for single game tickets for the conference foes.
SEC teams could do a 9 game schedule. Saban is for it. Miles is opposed last I heard. Apparently he is not alone.
As a fan, I would much rather see one more game of value on the schedule.
It's got to be frustrating to buy season tickets every year knowing there's 3 home games each year that are probably going to be yawnfests.

I just learned about this South Carolina law in this thread.
I guess that pretty much means Slive (if he wanted to put a no FCS rule in place) would be asking Carolina to break the law. Non starter all day long.
Realistically, that means the only way a no FCS rule will ever be implemented in the SEC will be if the college football playoff disqualifies a team for having playing a FCS school.
I don't blame the South Carolina legislators. If these games must go on, then keeping the money in state is the only way to go in my mind.

Right. Based on recent history, playing an FCS school is roughly on par w/ playing one of the lower echelon B12 teams.

I'm against this, as should the other schools who have an OOC in-state rivalry game. In addition to the Clemson game, USC is resuming a pretty regular series with UNC. A nine-game conference schedule would really hinder and discourage decent OOC scheduling.

this would not get rid of FCS games
it would make it MORE likely you'd be getting one every year

What's wrong with scheduling a little guy here and there. I see no problem with a tune up game and it should also be considered charity. The smaller schools need a big payout like that. It's a win/win.
