IF LSU loses... (from a realistic Bama fan)

and wins out the rest of the year, and even if they miss the SEC Champ game they should raise high hell if they aren't in the playoff bracket. Based on everything we've learned about the selection criteria from yesterday, their only loss would be to a team that is in the playoffs (or was picked to be in the playoffs by years end).
One other thing...
There was absolutely no reason to put Bama in at this point. That story will play itself out this weekend. The committee has set a bad precedent by doing this. Why in the blue hell would you put a 1 loss team in when you didn't have to. Stirring up fans and media is the only reason I can think of.

You'll be blasted by your own fans but you speak the truth. I don't care, really, because this will all be wiped clean every weekend moving forward, but there is no reason to have any 1 loss team in the final 4 right now.

Agree. Totally unnecessary at this point.
You've got more than a dozen undefeated teams ... and you pick a team with a BAD loss at home.

Nothing else matters, win on the field and this poll don't mean shite!

great post, haven't thought about that yet. Would be very interesting to hear them explain that.

LSU will not get in with 1 loss. They all but said last night that Saturday is pretty much an in/out game for both teams. The committee will become the ultimate hypocrites in this scenario.

What if Bama wins on a last second FG?
Do they deserve to be ranked ahead of LSU?
LSU would have the higher quality loss (a term that Herbstreit loves)

If they have an argument for one of the top 4 teams then I'm all for it. Especially if everyone around them loses late

Agree about LSU.
Also agree about setting the precedent, but it has been set already. Last year I was wondering why they would come out with playoff rankings so early, which could only serve to cause them trouble at the end. Sure enough, in the very last week they shook up the whole list (without sufficient reason), just to get it where they knew they wanted it in the first place. I would caution anyone not to assume that any of these premature rankings will limit what the committee does at the end. They'll throw it out the very last week and do what they want.

Losing late should not matter. This is not the BCS.

Sure there was. It ensures Bama makes the playoff if they win out, regardless of how OM season ends up

not sure why you're responding to me

I mean you say that but late losses have always been crippling in CFB

I'd say a win is a win. You're right about the quality of loss aspect, but I don't think you can look at it that way. Yes, our loss was to a dumpster fire of a team...but we had 5 turnovers, of which three were self inflicted. A better question would be "What if LSU beats itself?" But, you have to look at the fact that the your loss would come later in the season and Alabama is a much better team than they were when we played Ole Miss.

It was a genius move to put Bama in the top 4 this week.
If Bama wins, they get to say, "Told you Bama deserved a spot. We do know what we're doing". They then drop LSU out to 6 or so, depending on the score, and get to add TCU/Baylor/ND to back up their assertion that the rankings are "fluid".
If LSU wins, they get to drop Bama out of contention, move TCU/Baylor/ND into the 4th spot and move a new team into contention. Once again, the "fluid" point gets proven.
Having Bama ranked 5-8 leaves them at risk of just switching Bama and LSU's positions which hurts their fluid claim.
It's all about playing the media and fans that the committee is willing to move people in and out of contention week to week.

Why in the frick is it so hard for college football fans to understand how opinion polls work?
The reason the four teams that appear at the top of the CFP poll appear at the top of the poll is because in the opinions of the pollsters, they are the four best teams.
There are no formulas, no conditions, just opinions on who the four best teams are - THIS WEEK.
