If they had done what I wanted, we never get Saban and no telling where we are right now.

That being said, Les Miles is the most successful coach in LSU history and has shown class all along the way. If you need to let him go, do it the right way.

Im sure Saban was already on Bama's radar, not exactly a similar situation.

Then you'd be dead wrong. We offered the job to Rich Rodriguez and got turned down before offering Saban.

***Thanks for reminding me. It's the time of year to be thankful and I need to send a turkey dinner to Rita Rodriguez.***

Obviously Bama made the right call, but I think Shula would have eventually had a lot of success at Bama. Look at the job he is doing with that offense in Carolina. If my school had an opening, I would want them to take a look at Shula. Think he'd be a good fit for South Carolina.

You probably would've gotten him a year later. I don't think he was leaving Miami if not for the Alabama job (that year)

Is a legendary college football coach on the market? If so, let me know and I'll give Joe Alleva a call

Not quite how it happened, from what I understand. Coach fRod was all but hired until Sexton contacted the UA money men to let them know Saban could be had. It's my belief that Bama backed of during negotiations, not fRod.

Before all that, I remember telling Bama fans that they should keep Shula for another year because I figured Saban would be more receptive to taking the job after 2007. He surprised me by bailing on the NFL after only two seasons, I thought he'd at least give it another year.

That's very different from any accounts I've heard, but I don't claim to be an insider so I don't know.

Shula was brought in because nobody wanted the job. We were on probation that removed 30 schollies from our lineup.

I know this for a fact, talk of Saban began as early as 2005 even when Mike was 10-2 because we knew that 10-2 was probably a not gonna happen again.

I'll say this. Would have liked to have seen Mike during his tenure with a full cupboard and seen what he could do. 10-2 in 05 was nothing short of one of the best coaching jobs ever in the SEC. Truthfully though, had we not been on probation Mike Shula nor Mike Riley even get reached out to. Probably 10 coaches had said no when we got to them.

That's a fricking ridiculous comparison. Shula was a 26-23 coach with one winning season. Les Miles has a .775 winning percentage at LSU and zero seasons with less than eight wins. Les Miles has a lot more in common with Gene Stallings than he does with Mike freaking Shula.

I respected Mike Shula for the way he carried himself and the way he represented the university. But, I knew it was time for him to go.

I was more disappointed with the way the Bill Curry situation was handled. I thought he did a good job but was undermined by the hangers-on inside the AD.

Some people are too loyal for their own good. No matter how shitty a coach is there are always the people saying to support them.

I didn't. I wanted him gone after 2005
