frick you gumps are dumb. No you didn't. You started a guy who played QB in high school, was recruited as a QB, played QB as a freshman, made a change for one year to get playing time, and was moved back to QB after that. He was also a 5th year senior.

Bama will be fine. The defense will carry whatever freshman mistakes Hurts makes. As long as he limits his turnovers to the other team's side of the field, Bama will be gravy. He will turn it over, it's what true freshmen do, but where he turns it over will decide whether they are a playoff team or a really good team.

Sidenote: if Hurts does, in fact, start, Bama is going to have a massive QB exodus of transfers

This. There are some that think this defense is shades of 2011. Let that sink in. If you can't score, you can't beat us.

I agree with this. I think Bateman could be serviceable but why use him when we have 2 guys with really high ceilings.

WRONG! He played multiple positions in highschool. Was recruited as an athlete, played RB his first year, then DB, then qb, then rb, then finished being a sec champion at qb. LSU probably cant remember what that feels like... get your facts right!

No true freshman QB can win the SEC with Bama's road schedule. Bama loses at least two of these four road games: at Ole Miss, at Arkansas, at Tennessee and at LSU

The defense is going to be the determining factor for this team not the qb.

I really hope this is true. I feel like it isn't, however.

Well, for starters if you look back you'll see when Bama recruited him his position was athlete.

But what you're not smart enough to pick up on (or maybe you're just new here) is that the 'we won the SEC with a RB under center' is a shot at all the posters on this site that declared with 100% certainty that Bama would lose somewhere between 3 to 5 games because "you have a RB playing quarterback and he can't throw a deep ball".

The shait they're now saying about Hurts is just a variation of the things they were saying about Sims and then about Coker. They don't really have a foundation for it, they're just looking at whomever Saban anoints to take the reins and desperately searching for a reason to hope that this is finally the year.

Sims is a running back. Bama will lose at least 3.
Coker is slow and dumb. Bama will lose at least 3.
Hurts is a true freshman. Bama will lose at least 3.

I guess if they keep saying it maybe one day they'll be right, but whomever takes the field against USC will be Saban's 5th first time starter in his tenure at Bama. Here's what the others have done:

McElroy - SEC title, National title.
McCarron - National title
Sims - SEC title
Coker - SEC title, National title

Still want to bet against Hurts?

I wouldn't bet against bama period, just becuase of the reputation that saban has built for himself.

But you surely realize hurts is in a different boat than the other 4 QBs you menitoned. Sure some of those guys were "new" starters, but none were TFr.

Of course Hurts is different but here's the thing - every one of those guys was different than the other. Of the 4, only McCarron was what you could really consider a completely well rounded prospect. McElroy didn't have good arm strength. Sims had problems with both accuracy and reads (Bama went to the no huddle/shotgun because he was really struggling under center). Coker was slow and appeared to have trouble counting to potato at times.

And yet despite their flaws, the least any of the four did was win the SEC.

If Hurts gets the nod, he will absolutely make freshman mistakes. There's no doubt about that at all - but if the reports coming out of practice about his raw talent are true then he's also going to make plays the other four simply didn't have the ability to make.

In the end, those two factors will very likely cancel each other out and put the fate of 2016 Bama in the place it has rested for all those other first year QBs, which is in the hands of the defense and the running game - and if you're betting against those then you're betting against Saban himself. Good luck with that.

One final note. Hurts is indeed a true freshman, but it isn't like he just showed up in August. He was an early enrollee who's been with the team all summer. He was also given the task of simulating DeShawan Watson on the scout team in Bama's title game prep - which I think says a ton about how much the staff thinks of him.

No. It's not. But deep down you know that.. You're a smart poster who is optimistic about his talented true frosh QB. Nothing wrong with that
Yes. It is. Deep down we all know the easiest way to quiet a rowdy LSU crowd is for Bama's defense to man up on that LSU oline and make Fournette & Harris uncomfortable.
