Hypothetical College Football ranking formula based on promotion/relegation

I made a hypothetical College Football ranking formula based on the promotion/relegation concept. The current 8 divisions of 15 teams (with a ninth, essentially irrelevant division) is just a starting point using the latest AP Poll and NPI ratings. The poll would start being generally accurate after Week 8. What do you think?

Would be awesome. Especially if you only played the teams in your division each year.

Well that's a whole different story right there . And yes that'd be awesome. Can you imagine a regular season made up of the top 15 teams in the country playing only each other?

I will update this as the season passes, and post the Top 25 that results

Yes. That would be amazing.

Re: promotion/demotion, top and bottom two moveup/down or can some team from say league 6 go all the way to league 1?

I like the way you think man. I posted this same idea on the off-topic board a few weeks ago. Leave this thread up though.

I'm confused. Care to explain what this is/how this works?

ETA: do you only play teams in your "division" aside from the cross division games you have listed?

ETA pt 2: I think I understand. This would be awesome.

Teams play each other for a certain amount of points. In soccer, a win is 3 points, draws are 1 point to each team, and losses are no points.

The bottom three teams from each division at the time of the division swaps would be relegated to the next league down.

The top three teams from that division would be promoted up to play in the top division.

That process goes all the way through with each division

I called them divisions because I originally was toying with the soccer idea. This spreadsheet uses the divisions only for win/loss weight regarding SOS. like I said earlier, I'll update this during the season and post again to clear it up.

For a hypothetical, if Alabama beat Ohio State, would that be 1 point or 3 points?

No playoffs, the champion is whoever finishes with the most points.

but say Alabama was the away team, it'd be

Alabama +3 (* 1.5) = +4.5
Ohio State -1

and Ohio State being away, it'd be

Alabama +3
Ohio State -1 (/1.5) = -.6667

You should do the same for home wins and losses.

Alabama win at OSU

Alabama 4.5
OSU -1.5

Alabama win at home

Alabama 2
OSU -.6667

How I wish we had some form of relegation in college football so certain teams were no longer relevant.

This is my wet dream. Turn my rating concept into a yearly competition, baby we got a stew going.
