A 5 team playoff might look something like this and allow for a representative from each of the 5 major conferences:

1st Round - #1 gets a bye, #2 plays #5 and 3 plays 4.

2nd Round - Winner of 2 vs 5 gets a bye, #1 plays winner of 3 vs 4.

3rd Round - Championship

This way it would only add 1 extra game.

How you have the Power 5 conferences, and only have a 4 team playoff is beyond comprehension.

That makes no sense. You goto 6 with 2 byes or goto 8 with no byes.

Just do 6 with two byes if you are going this route. In fact 6 seems to reward the top 2 and I would think would eliminate somebody being "left out". Though I guess this year the debate would have been Baylor, Mich St, and Miss St. Better then leaving out TCU.

Yep, having 1 at large slot might satisfy those who complain that the 5 major conferences don't have the best team but the question is who gets the at large bid? Many would want ND in the playoffs every year.

LSU got this if only it were a 29-team playoff

Why stop at 5? 64 team playoff is the only way to ensure everyone gets a fair shot.

This. I like 4, but I wouldn't mind a move to 6 using a system like the NFL. It would be the 5 BCS conferences plus 1 at large bid. This year, that at large would have likely been TCU.

That leaves out half the teams. Only TRUE fair way is 128 team playoff.

This is dumb because it would possibly mean the #3 team would have to play 3 games and the #5 team would only have to play 2.

The only issue with the at large spot is there will be a very vocal group that wants some criteria for a non-Power 5 school to have a chance at getting into that slot.

Already we have the highest ranked non Power-5 with a way into the New Years 6.

Actually you can have a 128 team playoff if you use only conference champions and have everyone get a fair shot.

No system can be considered 'fair' until FCS teams got a chance to compete too.

To the OP, that is far too complicated. Have #4 v #5 during the week of the New Orleans Bowl, then the winner enters the 4-team playoff as it is currently constructed.

Yep. One spot for each of the Power 5 champs, plus a single at-large bid (which could be allocated to the best non-champ, to a non Power 5 team, or to Notre Dame until they are forced to join the ACC). Give a bye to the top two teams as a reward.

None of that is revolutionary. The biggest step is this: Get rid of the bowls and play the games at the favored team's home stadium. Create a revenue sharing system for the road teams and their conferences. Hold the championship at a neutral site, which is funded by the Power 5.

Yeah, why even have a season? Just start day 1 with the AP preseason ranking and start the playoff with all of the teams in there. #1 plays #128 and #2 plays #127 and so on. If you lose 1 game you are out. LOL.....

Of course this is all BS. 4 is enough. You got to give power to the season. Football should be more than who is best at the end of the year.
