@DellengerAdv: RT: @McMurphyESPN
Hugh Freeze in favor of getting rid of National Signing Day; whenever player commits, he signs LOI LINK

I've advocated this for a long time. There would have to be some very specific outs put in place, but this would really cut down on a lot of the bs that goes on in recruiting both from schools and recruits

I see no problem with this.

An early optional signing period around August 1st would be better IMO

That just moves the cycle up imo.

It's an improvement on what we have though.

You could use the system in the OP to really cut down time spent recruiting.

Eh. I disagree with him. A lot of kids go to programs where they feel comfortable with the coaching staff that's there. Not necessarily because the school is great. Kids should be given a chance to back out if a coach is fired or goes to another program.

I agree that if a staff is fired the kid can get out of his LOI.

So if a player commits his junior year and the coach is fired his senior he should have to honor it?

i also think that an 18 year is extremely impressionable and he could end up making an uninformed decision based on a good time he has one weekend. i think it would be a very slippery slope for the kids' sakes

So...you would have players sign an LOI before the current players could declare for the draft.

I think you need to know how many spots you actually have available before you can have players sign LOIs. Otherwise, you will only escalate processing throughout college football.

Strongly Disagree

A kid should be able to change their mind. We all make decisions and regret them. If people commit and then decide later on that they would like to choose another school then good for them. These are teenagers after all and coaches getting butthurt over decommitments should look in the mirror. A coach can pack his shite up and go at anytime yet once a kid is locked in he is forced to sit a year before he can play. It's bullshite.

Lacrosse basically has this due to a still mostly-followed gentleman's agreement between coaches to not recruit committed players.

The result is that coaches offer players earlier and earlier in an attempt to beat each other to the punch. You get full classes before the recruits have even played a varsity game. Big schools have started actively recruiting and taking commitments from 8th graders. It's out of control. Lacrosse also has transfer rates approaching 25% at those schools. They don't find the right fit.

That's in fricking lacrosse. Football would be worse due to the higher stakes involved.

There is still going to be some sort of date in which he can first commit, which will in turn be a "signing day"

No, not in what I'm proposing anyway. Firing of the coach, legal/health problems from the recruit would all be outs.

My proposal...

No contact (phone/social media/in person) with recruit until after the completion of his JR year. The recruit can then sign from that point until Feb 2 following his SR year.

Players may get out of their LOI if any member of the coaching staff they signed with is fired.

Coaches may rescind offer if recruit is involved in any legal issues or has an injury which will make him unable to play ever again (med scholarships presented in this case)

4 year guaranteed scholarships.

This cuts out all of the flip flopping, offer pulling, non commitable offers etc bs that is so prominent in the recruiting game right now. It would also greatly reduce the amount of time coaches have to spend on recruiting players, and also the time and hassle recruits must endure.

Not 100% which school you want to go to? Wait. Not ready to accept a commitment from a kid. Don't offer.

So, because sometimes an 18-year-old will make hasty decisions and change his mind, the only solution is to hold him accountable to the decisions he makes when he is 16. Makes sense.
