Thanks for your opinion, Dr. Weiss III.

All these things are true, but he still accomplished more good things for this state than any governor prior or since. Maybe crooked as a dogs hind leg but not terrible.
So happens that I live in an area that the Longs greatly influenced like no other governors so I may be a tad partial

Then you mix in the corruption. He skimmed the top off the new public revenue you mentioned. He (and his brother) were in bed with the mafia. He handed out state jobs for favors. Bribery and graft was rampant during his (and his brother's) tenure.
People put Long's tenure as governor in the context of todays politics - which is a mistake. It should be put in the context of the politics of the time. Long was the first governor to come from outside of the Democratic political machine (outside of Reconstruction). He was the first governor to come from North Louisiana. He was fighting against the political corruption and graft common for 100 years in Louisiana.
The difference was that he was sharing the kickbacks with the People, and not just cronies in the Machine.
Make no mistake, Long was NOT the first - or even most - corrupt governor of Louisiana, he just had a different political base: Poor people. These days, giving political favors back to the People looks like communism.

I believe you've experienced an overdose of academic kool-aid.

It doesn't work that way...

There's no doubt Long was dirty and unethical, that's for sure. But there's absolutely no overstating the positive impact he had on the state, either. It's just that it doesn't mesh with the rest of American politics.

You just have no idea about what came before him. It was worse.

Great deal of truth to this....
Our 1st Gov. elected by the people was so corrupt he barely escaped NY with his skin...
Yet won the popular vote in our state. Which only proves the old joke about how our populace likes our food and politicians.... Spicey!

I agree. Originally from Louisiana. Still think it's crazy that Grambling, La Tech, ULM are all 4yr universities and within 30min of each other. The only time we have that many 4yr schools that close to each other is in STL metro, but their metro area is almost 3million.
There are too many universities in N.La, but good luck closing one. And we wouldn't have two in Lincoln Parish if we hadn't had segregation, the only way for blacks to go to college was start their own. Goes for Southern too.

The state needs a Huey Long to shut down the multitude of worthless degrees and universities in the state. I'm looking at you, southern, SUNOLA, SUSLA, Nicholls, Mcneese St, Northwestern St, Grambling, LSU-E, LSU-A, and ULM.

Reading this makes me laugh a little. When I was doing steel inspections on the Huey P Long bridge in Jefferson Parish, during the widening, I must have written "Roll Tide Roll" hundreds of times using a paint marker. I even began marking approved connections using RTR instead of my initials.
Most were sand blasted off when they did their final painting. But I also wrote it on a lot of the original steel for the railroad. And NOPB was too cheap to paint the original steel to match, just the retrofitted connections. So there are still a ton of Roll Tides written on that bridge today.
When I get to heaven, Huey is gonna want to beat my arse.

So keep an entire university open because it has a couple of programs that compete nation wide?
No, fold the programs into a more valuable school.

But the contractor's who did the widening we're pretty legit. If Boh Bros. had tried that project, then yeah, I'd be scared too.

Even back then elections were held to determine the legislature. Unless someone died and there was a special appointment, which would have to have been the case here if true.
