I agree. Originally from Louisiana. Still think it's crazy that Grambling, La Tech, ULM are all 4yr universities and within 30min of each other. The only time we have that many 4yr schools that close to each other is in STL metro, but their metro area is almost 3million.

Kinda like Auburn financing the rebuilding of Cam Newton's dad's church? Or Alabama giving a nice cushy job to Landon Collins' girlfriend. Amirite?

I think we have identified an educational gap right here folks. Well done. No swing necessary.

He did a lot for LSU, but outside of that he was a terrible governor. He was just another radical socialist that gave people false hope with his "Every man a king and a chicken in every pot" slogan just to get votes.

His influence is a state culture of untouchable entitlements and poor politics. That directly effects LSU because combined they are the reason for the current budget cliff.

The effect on the football team is he created a state culture of equality of ends, which means that the budget cuts present an optics problem for the AD. They have held back on putting up facilities that can be fully paid for to avoid a target being put on the back of the LSU AD like what a Tennessee has to deal with (aka forced and floored contributions from the cash flush AD to the educational side).

Um have you ever been to NELA??? Do you know how far Ruston/Grambling are from Monroe??lmao. Ruston and Grambling are like 5 minutes apart in the same Parish. ULM is next Parish over.

GLad to know I live in a state where the Governor cant be involved with either schools athletic endeavors. Just too much of a conflict. The Governor can attend the Bama, AU homecoming games and I think the Iron Bowl. He cant involve himself past that. I think ALL Louisiana Governors get tix or buy them and suites, maybe? I know over the years I have seen many governors at various games. I'm sure the Greenies like this

Back when, he also wanted to expand the stadium but at that time, legislature wouldn't approve He said screw it, we'll make dorms in the stadium hence the windows in our northern endzone

You're right except for the north end zone part. It was the east and/or west sides. The north end zone wasn't enclosed until the 1940s ('47?), well after Huey had been killed.

Huey Long expanded the stadium, the band, and hired LSU's first great coach (Bernie Moore).

LSU football wouldn't be what it is today without him, frankly.

Never would've happened, FDR said the two most dangerous people in America were Huey Long and Douglas MacArthur.

I guess they represented the political extremes of the time.

He restructured the excise tax to allow Louisiana to collect much more revenue on its oil than it would have otherwise. He used the extra money to build a huge amount of infrastructure (roads, bridges, etc.), set up one of the best charity hospital systems in the nation (at the time). He found a way to supply school books to kids who went to Catholic schools without running afoul of the establishment clause separating church and state.

In short, he took one of the most undeveloped, back-woods states in the country and transformed it with hospitals, roads, bridges, schools and other infrastructure all during a depression and without putting undue tax pressure on the citizens of the state (milking out of state oil companies instead). How in the hell was he a "terrible" governor? He was, without any possible shadow of a doubt, the greatest governor Louisiana has ever had.

The only legitimate complaint about Huey was that he was corrupt. Yes, he probably stole money, and he definitely peddled his influence. Morally, it's certainly possible to fault him for that. But he did more and better things for the state than anyone else ever has or likely ever will. He might have been a crooked governor, but nobody with any sense at all would ever call him a terrible one.

You know other states have competent governance without corruption. Actually that is the national standard outside Louisiana.

When the greatest governor your state ever had was basically a gangster the leadership in your state is at a third world level.

Most conservatives would reject the idea that taxing oil production and spending it on public works is a good thing. I'm not one of them, but that's what they think.

Then you mix in the corruption. He skimmed the top off the new public revenue you mentioned. He (and his brother) were in bed with the mafia. He handed out state jobs for favors. Bribery and graft was rampant during his (and his brother's) tenure.
