Yes, I stole this from reddit but it's pretty interesting, from Huey P. Long: A Political Contradiction

quote:

"His activities at LSU centered on the football team and the band more than on mundane academics. He made the band the largest in the nation. In fact, during one year the university expended more money on the band than on the law school and graduate school combined. Long hired the best football coaches money could buy and then told them how to run the team, although he had never played football himself. He housed gifted players in the Governor's Mansion, where he fattened them up on milkshakes aid sirloin steaks. He bought an airplane to use on recruiting trips and offered state jobs to athletes and their families. He even appointed a star halfback to the state legislature. When editors of the LSU student newspaper condemned the act, he had them expelled. After LSU lost one game 7-6 he had a follower introduce a bill outlawing the point after touchdown."

Had no idea...especially the last sentence

Nice, hadn't heard that one.

Also,

quote:

In 1931, the administration of Louisiana State University was at odds with Huey Long, the state’s governor.

Long, who pined for a prominent football program, wanted to build more seats at Tiger Stadium, then only seven years old. The administration, most notably the president, James Smith, wanted to build more dormitories. It had even set aside $250,000 to construct more student quarters.

So Long and the athletic director, T. P. Head, known as Skipper, presented a novel idea to university officials — build the dorm rooms inside the stadium, which had seats only on its east and west sides. The construction would occur on top of the existing stadium, housing dorm rooms inside the stadium walls and placing seats above the dorm rooms. The university got its dorms (430 rooms for 1,500 students) and Tiger Stadium got its seats (10,000). The new seats raised the stadium’s capacity to 22,000, far below the 92,500 it currently holds.

He offered state jobs to players and their families? Nice to know LSU was cheating that far back

The state needs a Huey Long to shut down the multitude of worthless degrees and universities in the state. I'm looking at you, southern, SUNOLA, SUSLA, Nicholls, Mcneese, Northwestern, Grambling, LSU-E, LSU-A, and ULM. It's depressing just thinking about how many obsolete universities the state has

eta: other than that, I'm pretty sure he was basically a socialist. Just want him to get rid of the universities and leave

Back when, he also wanted to expand the stadium but at that time, legislature wouldn't approve

He said screw it, we'll make dorms in the stadium hence the windows in our northern endzone

Louisiana has more division one schools than the state of Florida, who has 4x our population. I think Louisiana qualifies as an outlier in this particular situation

Every state have smaller universities. I guess you just want people in certain regions of the state not get educated.

In Missouri we have Mizzou(good school), Missouri State, St Louis University(good school), Truman State(good school), Missouri S&T(good school), Northwest Missouri State, Southeast Missouri State, Missouri Southern, Missouri Western, Lincoln, etc.

I agree there needs to be consolidation across the nation, but again Missouri's population is much larger than Louisiana's population. that's a significantly larger tax base to support education with

they're just missing the point that Louisiana has an absurd amount of division one schools in a very low populated state. while it's unsustainable for just about every other state too, the situation is far worse in Louisiana
