Hummm. Inturdesting

Florida and LSU were able to contain Manziel for a half. What did they do?
Answer: To start, Florida and LSU had talent.

They had a combined 11 defensive players selected in the first five rounds of the NFL draft, including four players taken in the first round.

Second, they stopped giving Manziel lanes to escape.

The Aggies had double-digit leads against both LSU and Florida in the second quarter, in part because Manziel made plays with his legs. He was a combined 6-of-9 passing outside the pocket for 80 yards and five first downs. He also had eight scrambles for 42 yards, including two scrambles for first downs.

But in the second half, LSU and Florida adjusted by sending fewer pass-rushers and having a player spy Manziel.

The Gators did not blitz once, and the Tigers blitzed only on obvious passing downs. The Aggies went from 5.3 yards per play and one three-and-out in the first half to 3.5 yards per play and six three-and-outs in the second half.

Manziel had a combined 38 yards outside the pocket in the second half.

Do y'all agree with this guy?

Why didn't that "spy" thing work for Alabama last year?

(BTW, I think he is wrong about the spy thing and needs to include a discussion on disguising coverages and dropping DLs into an underneath zone or the flats)

LSU and Florida seemed to have the lighter, quicker guys on D compared to Bama. Bama wasn't as fast laterally.

You would think that Bama could get into a quicker package and play LBs on the DL in a faux 3-4 like defense. They have lots of depth.

Johnny can throw better now than he could then. Not saying he can't be stopped, but last year's formula isn't necessarily one for success against this year's Johnny.

Rice and Sam Houston State are good indicators that JFF can throw better?

In both of those games, we abandoned the run game at critical times and failed to take advantage of play-action pass. JFF is a better passer this year. Somebody will get open if they let him sit back there all day. It goes back to disguised coverages and delayed blitzes.

Not attacking with a rush seems to open you up to getting mauled by an OL in the run game or being picked apart by a decent passer. I think Manziel has improved as a passer enough - from especially the Florida game - to challenge defenses through the air as well.

Huh?

Oh, yeah, I had the scoring order wrong. Nevermind.

Anyway, his rushing stats:

Johnny Manziel 17 27 0 1.6

The fact that Johnny steadily improved throughout last year, worked with Whitfield again in the off-season, AND torched Rice and Sam indicates that he's better though.

There were mutiple times he could have taken off against Sam for a TD, but chose to pass instead.
No one knows more than him that his improvement as a passer is required if he wants to beat Bama and LSU again.

Are you trying to have an actual football discussion on the Rant....

JFF has only rushed for 58 yards so far this season. He hasn't played in the manner that we grew accustomed to last year. He is much more of a pocket passer than he was last year.

That said, I believe that Johnny has been purposefully held back in what he could do in the offense until 9/14. A&M used the first two games for Johnny to get more comfortable with his freshmen receivers. The staff was already supremely confident in Johnny's scrambling ability; there was no need to work on that facet of his game.

Now Bama will have to pick their poison: force Johnny to beat 'em with his arm or by his scrambling ability. I suspect that it will be the former.

if we contain his running and make him mostly pass, its going to be alot of 3 and out (which is death to their offense) and pick city. our secondary is going to be very good this year

Yeah, because our 6'5" receiving core can't jump very high..

Johnny himself said hands down that defensively, LSU had the fastest athletes of all our competitors last year. No contest.
