We live in strange times. For example, I never saw the debate on transgender bathrooms coming. But being a sidewalk fan at Vandy, I should have. Vandy loses in football for one and only one simple reason, and it ain't academics. Academics is the lie smothering the truth.
Vandy loses in football because the snowflake administrators do not desire to be known as a masuculine football school. But that 40 million at the end of the season is soooo sweet it cannot be passed up.
Vandy has many advantages. A huge endowment reflecting impressive wealth. It resides in a great city just a stones throw from a recruiting bonanza. Not to mention academics is a plus, not a minus. Finally, Vandy is a charter member of the SEC, a conference second to none. Only a snowstorm of non-native snowflakes could mess that up.
Signing off,
The Commodore

You make a valid point.
Stanford has the best overall athletic department in the country and has been respectable in football for over a decade. No reason Vanderbilt could not bema Stanford.

Way more than it should.

Being the state's only major school/program is LSU's greatest advantage. It's also it's greatest vulnerability. Depending on the board and administration at a given time, it's used as political leverage.

I know for a fact that most of the state government does its best to hold back every program not named AU or UA.
Case in point: Ray Watts being a Paul Bryant Jr. hatchet man, attempting to kill off UAB football.
AU could be more successful, but their internal people are in the way of success more than state politics

Hard to believe Auburn in the crosshairs.

We've had politics in our athletics dept over the years have way too much say. I think is happens in more places we'd like to acknowledge. I think we ridded ourselves of such a stinker.

Aren't politics embedded in every damn thing these days?

This is the first time I've seen a Bama fan admit this about UAB without trying to defend it.

I no longer live in VA, but the only reason VA Tech is in the ACC, is due to political pressure. UVA wanted nothing to do with? them.

At Auburn, there is ZERO POLITICS in the athletic department.
It is a meritocracy as evidenced by the presence of Mr. Jay Jacobs as athletic director. There is no one in the world that brings a broader experience in the many facets of Athletic Administration than Mr. Jacobs. I'm shocked that he has not been scooped up by a Fortune 500 company as a CEO.

It is said that Tennessee has a booster problem. David Blackburn isn't AD right now because he isn't a little yes man bitch.
Also rumored that Barnes is being limited in what he can do in recruiting because of Pearl and that goblin they hired to coach the basketball team got in trouble.
The new chancellor was mostly likely hired for PR reasons.

Someone else will know better than me but the house of representatives meets far far away in Little Rock.
"So ya'll passed a bill that says we can conceal carry on college campuses? How about in the stadium?"
"No, no, not in the stadium."
"oh, ok, thanks, bye."
"Fayetteville, we want more games in Little Rock."
"No, no, how about less games in Little Rock?"
Honestly though, you don't become head of the Football Playoff Committee without knowing lots of people. But it also says a whole whole lot about the honesty of the program and the people who run it. Our big black eye is a motorcycle accident with a mistress. Bobby Petrino probably came here to fix his image, in reality. If Arkansas were ever to do really big things in football like we almost did with Petrino a lot of people could wash their hands of what the sport has become. Our motto isn't "uncommon" for no reason.

Our incompetent president put the kibosh on firing Les Miles in 2015 when Miles' tenure should have been over and done. That 10-month delay led to the 2016 season being a waste and left our incompetent AD to settle for Orgeron. So with regard to the question, I'd say politics has a huge role, much to LSU's detriment.

Ray Charles could see that from a mile away.
Some issues require the removal of the Crimson shades...
