How much does a coaching staff liking each other matter?

Pat Dye notes that the Auburn staff last year didn't like each other very much but that this year they all seem to enjoy each other now. Does it lead to more cohesion in planning and teaching? Seems like it would.
quote:
“I think coach Malzahn has done a great job of every change he’s made on his staff has been a positive,” Dye said Tuesday on the ESPN radio affiliate in Auburn. “Every change, without exception, I don’t care what it is — it’s been a positive. The coaches like each other and that wasn’t the case last year. When the coaches don’t like each other, the players are confused. Who are you going to listen to? Who has the influence? Coach Malzahn is a lot more involved and he said he was going to be more involved. Everything he said has been right down the line with his plan.”

I think it's a very big deal. Not necessarily liking each other but at least having respect for one another.

I think them being friendly with each other can help, but I don't think it's something that's necessary.
They definitely need to respect each other, and in turn give each other reason to be respected though.

Agree - especially assistants towards the head coach.

It's huge. It's the same with any type of organization.

Not necessarily, supposedly some discontent with Craig

I was part of a staff last year where other assistants were undermining the head coach and talking to my athletes in private and discrediting some of the things that I did/didn't do and it caused a lot of disharmony.
Most people don't think Gus made homerun hires and a couple of them will be considered downgrades, but I think he's at least got guys that will work with him and run his system without questioning him...and he will live or die by those hires.

Just look at Bama's success. There may not be a bigger douche alive than Kiffin, and Saban has always been a dick. Has it hurt them yet?

Respect matters so much more than who likes you. Saban is an a-hole but he's also the greatest college coach of all time.

Makes more sense to me that it's Boom since he was only with Gus last year

At least six, maybe even seven

Yeah, but that is not what has been out there for several months now.
It's been a heavily believed rumor that Craig did not get along with several on the staff and the reason for his departure

There has to be a respect and all on the same page.
Doesn't mean there can't be disagreements, but the group needs to be moving towards the same goal especially the direction the HC has directed the staff towards.

Agreed with what other posters said. Not necessarily Boom. Could have been Craig. There were reports of tension there. The whole episode with Duke Williams supports that too. Also, while I liked Muschamp and thought he made progress throughout the season, he certainly brought a different attitude that may have been off putting to some on the staff. Jeff Grimes left to coach with his son, but could have been an issue there. And I always wondered how Lance Thompson fit in the equation. Add all this to Malzahn admittedly taking a more "CEO" role approach to the team and who knows.
I do know Malzahn and Hand worked together in the past so that's got to help off the field. My hope is it translates into on field success.

If everyone is doing a good job and the team is winning then I think its something that doesn't become a problem. The issue is when people are looking for others to blame.

Agreed. If there's not at least a professional respect, there's no way you'll have a cohesive organization.

That is true. The problems usually come to the surface when you start losing. Winning can cover a lot of that up though.
