I've only seen one eligible underclassman starter that has announced, Eddie Jackson (S), and he's staying for his senior year. Tim Williams (OLB) is staying as well, but he wasn't a starter, even though he was one of our best pass rushers...

Defensive starters that are definitely gone include seniors Ragland (ILB), Cyrus Jones (CB/PR), Mattias-Smith (S), Jarran Reed (DL), Dillon Lee (OLB), and Denzell Duval (OLB). I would guess that Ashawn Robinson (DL) and Jonathan Allen (DL) will declare as most projections have them goin' in the first round. Heard rumors that Allen might stay, but I wouldn't bet on it...haven't heard anything on Reuben Foster (ILB) yet...

Bama really had two starting defenses this year because of depth. So it's sort of strange but also true that we had like 20 defensive starters this year. We lose:

Reed, Cy Jones, Ragland, Devall, Geno Smith and Lee to graduation. Robinson will likely leave early and Allen might as well. That's a lot but we return:

Payne, Tomilson, Hand, Foster, Tim Williams, Ryan Anderson, Evans, Hamilton, Eddie Jackson, Fitzpatrick, Humphrey and Harrison. Those are all guys who started or were basically co-starters and played huge minutes.

So we lose and keep about half of what made this defense amazing. Secondary could be better while front 7 will take a step back.

How many starters...

This indicates you might have some a misconceptions about modern defense which employs "packages" rather than "starters." While the term "starter" is widely thrown around, a player can be a "starter" and never see the field in a particular game. Several interior linemen "starter" for Alabama had limited playing time in the NC game.

Alabama will lose about seven to nine players that had significant roles and playing time on the front-7 of the defense.

A’Shawn Robinson
Dalvin Tomlinson
Jarran Reed
Darren Lake
Ryan Anderson
Reggie Ragland
Dillon Lee
D. J. Pettway
Denzell Duval

In all of those positions there are letterman players who logged significant playing time returning...and those players were generally 4-star above recruits. At no positions will the Alabama D be required to depend on unproven freshmen or sophomores.

This is not meant to be a slam at LSU ... but there is not a single returning player on LSU's defense that could "start" at Alabama next year. Some could probably log some playing time however...

Jamal Adams would start anywhere in the country, including Alabama. If Beckwith comes back, he's also start at Alabama. Arden Key might, depending on the package, as well as Lewis Neal.

Don't know 'bout that as I'm not familiar with everyone on their D...but if Beckwith and White return, I think both of those would start...and Adams as well...

I honestly don't even know who our "starters" were on the front seven this year. SO many guys played a ton of minutes. I know we're losing several of them, but I also know a lot of the others will be back.

Adams and Beckwith would both be key contributors and would likely start.

Tomilson and Anderson will both be back in 2016. Red-shirt juniors in 2015.

I'm not saying Beckwith or White or Adams are not good players. But.. would you take Beckwith or Foster in the middle? Who in the secondary would White beat out? Same for Adams.

Key has a good future but he would probably have been red-shirted at Alabama and not have seen the field this year. He would be behind other DEs next year but would be getting time and he would have been marked for serious time as a junior.

LSU's defense was seriously neglected in recruiting the last few years. As a result, a number of freshmen were used by necessity. And they played well which is why so many LSU players are on the all-freshman teams.

But...that is still comparative youth and when it is competing against older players that have been in a system longer, it is disadvantaged. But this is just my opinion and what do I know?

Les has one of the top 5 most talented teams each year. Things will tilt his way at some point and he will get another win against Saban. That's if LSU doesn't run him out of town before that happens.
