How good would Kentucky basketball be if Pitino had stayed?

Or do y'all feel Coach Cal is better?

I think y'all could've been even more dominant.

both are slimy but i like Cal who comes across as less slimy. At least Cal has not been involved with a waitress at a restaurant and has not had his program implicated in the recruiting chit that has Lville not playing in the dance this year.

I asked a few of my UK friends if they could go back and never have Pitino leave, would they? And they said they would. Cal is a good coach but if Pitino had stayed at UK they would have won 4 or 5 national title by now.

Yea Pitino would be an absolute legend had he stayed at UK and never went pro.

Pitino would've likely been on the same level as Coach K.

Seeing the things that have happened at Louisville under him, I don't know how things would've lasted at UK if he continued down that path. Of course, I think things really changed for him as a person when his BIL died in 9/11 and if he was at UK when that happened I wonder if he would've had a Gillispie-esque moment in the wake (it really fricked him up).

Hindsight is 20/20 though.

I wish he would've stayed, and I think Pitino wishes the same.

We dominated with Pitino.

We're doing pretty damn well Cal at the helm as well.

But, ya. We'd probably have another 'ship' or two if Pitino had stayed.

Why would the death of his brother in law frick him up so bad?

They would be enjoying the second greatest run in the history of college basketball.

They were best friends as well as brother-in-laws. Ever lost a sibling? It fricks with you. Anyway, it's why the UofL basketball dorm is named Minardi Hall and they host the Minardi Classic in his honor every year.

I believe if Pitino had stayed at UK, coach K would almost be an after thought.

Suppose Rick stayed, who does Louisville hire.

Cal would be my guess.

The bigger issues would be the intangibles, as such an implication would mean Rick would still be at UK today (highly improbable)

Having a black HC at UK and winning a NC assured a changed dynamic inside and outside of UK, with Pitino the whole time that never happens.

Billy Clyde never gets hired, which would be positive to UK.

I may be a minority but Rick and Tubby out the door was about a simple difference between a school like Kentucky / Indiana and Louisville / Texas Tech. While it has nothing to do directly with basketball it speaks volumes about what goes on at different schools and AD's offices.

Pitino out the door was just as expected as Tubby out the door, and both reflected the stance of UK against an offspring coaching after the parent. Both Rick and Tubby wanted their kids to follow in their footsteps and UK was pretty direct in not allowing this to happen. Only UK changing their stance, which I firmly believe will never happen, keep Rick at UK.

In short, your question is moot, as without his son, Rick does not stay.

He would be as big as Saban is at Bama and Coach K is at Duke. Kentucky went to three straight national championship games in the late 90s with Pitino's recruits. They were in the middle of a dominant run with no signs of slowing down when he left. Kentucky would have undoubtedly won two or three more championships if he had stayed around.

Pitino is a better floor coach than Cal

I wouldn't go that far but I definitely believe a program like UCONN wouldn't have won four championships in 15 years if Pitino had stick around.

I will always like Rick Pitino the coach. He's a better coach than Cal but not close to being as good a recruiter.

I wish he had stayed at UK. I think we would be even with UCLA in NCs by now.

I agree that Cal would probably have gone to Louisville. Imagine that.

Cal is 8-1 against Pitino since coming to UK and I think that's because UK will always get better players than the Ville, no matter who is coaching the Cats.
