Also, anybody with 2 eyes and a brain can tell you the 2015 Auburn defense is much better than the 2014 version. Not even close, really.
Agreed. Stats can often be misleading. I've always thought its more accurate to look at Offense and Defense stats "per play" instead of "per game" because some teams and conferences run far more/fewer plays than other. If you look at Total Defense per Play, Auburn is improved:
2015 defense: 5.54 yards/play (#63)
2014 defense: 5.67 yards/play (#76)
2013 defense: 5.96 yards/play (#95)
Amazing how that 2013 team was able to win the SEC despite having a defense that was THAT bad.
Muschamp is a great defensive coach. We all know that. While Auburn's defense was suspect this year, I do think its likely trending in the right direction.

Right on. Muschamp's fixed the X's and O's problem. The only reason they aren't statistically better is because he's still got a Jimmys and Joes problem.
I mean, that 2014 group was pathetic. They literally avoided blocks, had no tackling discipline and seemed to blow almost every other coverage. Just getting them to go to the right spots, fill gaps and gang tackle makes a huge difference.

And, unlike past years with a Gus offense, the reason they were on the field for a bunch of plays was not because Gus scored or punted quickly, it was because their offense just went 3 and out most series. Auburn's offensive pace was snail like this season. They just left their defense hanging out to dry every game.

That's progress. .13 yards per play.

vs FBS Power 5 Teams
2014 - 6.14 yards/play
2015 - 5.60 yards/play

Yup. The A&M game was a flash of what we could do on defense with a capable offense.
First half was also sans Lawson and before Cass was moved to DE.

Desperate enough to hire a sociopathic mercenary like William Muschamp, a miserable failure as a head coach and complete psychotic maniac.
Gus knows absolutely nothing about defense or running a SEC program, so he brings in a coach he is obviously physically terrified of to coach defense and gives him 100% authority on that side of the ball. Gus has no idea about defense or how to coach it so he has to put complete faith into a man who will go woody Hayes on someone in the next 5 years.
For the second Iron Bowl in a row Gus does not mention anything about the defense as he cant talk about it because he know nothing about it.

That CB from Michigan who transferred wants a refund I'm told.

He didn't really have a choice on whether he wanted to stay at Michigan or not FWIW

After he dropped a sure Pick 6 in the 2nd quarter on Saturday I think Auburn might be the ones looking for the refund.

No matter what happens with will going forward, I look forward to the day you guys are over him.

I thought that was a mark in the positive column for coaches.

And we got our best player back on defense, which helped.
we still have a ways to go... but there was some promise moving forward.
I'll also add we gave up 24 points to Arkansas in Fayetteville... which ended up being one of the best offenses in the conference.

That was the first half of the year. They weren't playing that way the second half.

It was a good hire, buyouts and anger issues notwithstanding. Muschamp has put great defenses on the field, and even though he wasn't shocking the world this season -- his first, after all -- I was pretty impressed at how the defense stiffened up in the IB. Without the AU defense coming to play, the game would have been a blowout. I can see Auburn reaping the benefits in years to come, assuming Gus survives.

Unless you prefer your assistants to not get 15 yard penalties and nearly tossed from games.

You're trying too hard. It's not believable. Dial it back a little and you will start feeling some in.

I'm obviously not arguing that Muschamp is some sort of savior, but if you watched the second half of their season it was pretty clear their guys were fundamentally light years better than the years before and the first half of the season. They wore down against Ole Miss, UGA and Alabama, but for 3 quarters they played about as well as you could possibly expect from a team with so-so defensive talent like that.
Fun fact: Up until the final possession, after Melvin Ray dropped an easy 1st down pass that would have at least kept Derrick Henry off the field for the final two minutes, AU's defense had allowed 431 yards, 23 first downs and 22 points.
In the exact same point of the 2nd game of the season, AU's defense had allowed 437 yards, 27 first downs, and 20 points. To Jacksonville State.
Either AU's defense improved, or Bama's offense, with the leading Heisman candidate touching the ball 47 times, is roughly equal to the #4 offense in FCS. Which do you think it is?
