However, the team lost its shot at a title when it settled for a tie against Arkansas in the last game of the season
Just a few years later:

Death Penalty
On February 25, the committee voted unanimously to cancel SMU's entire 1987 football season and all four of SMU's scheduled home games in 1988.
Sound familiar, Ole Miss? We fricked up SMU's shot at a title and we fricked yours up, too. And like them, you're about to get the hammer.

You're not very smart, aren't you?

Yes I'm not.

If playing the role of spoiler is the most Arkansas fans have to look forward to, then more power to you. Don't look now, but Stoerner fumbled again.
That 1982 Arkansas/SMU game was awesome. The controversial and game-changing PI call was the hottest topic for the rest of the football season.

Here is a link to the SMU sanctions for basketball... LINK
Everyone keeps saying what OM did was worse. How?

Personally, I'm thinking that the focus of the NCAA may have nothing to do with what everyone thinks and from what I can see, a lot of teams around the country may not like what happens in the fall out. It all has to do with that place in Bradenton, FL. If that's the case, Bama, LSU, Michigan and FSU had better look out as well.

There are other eerie similarities that are clear or may arise as well:
Texas was beating that a$$ for SMU every year and boosters got tired of it.
Some other school in Mississippi was owning Ole Miss pretty regularly and threw up some billboards. Ole Miss boosters loved that don'tcha know.
Shortly after those eras of domination by a rival, both schools suddenly shot to the top of the national recruiting rankings...and some fans were really dumb enough to believe that the campus got better or the girls got prettier...or the coach they'd 'stolen' from Arkansas State was suddenly the best recruiter in college football.
One of them ended up on the death penalty...the other's investigation is really just starting. The NCAA strangles cheaters very, very slowly.
Denial is just the first stage for the black bear fans. The other stages will follow. Its normal.
For those of you that don't remember SMU...here ya go:

I really doubt that Ole Miss was stupid enough to sign contracts with kids which is really what got SMU the death penalty. They actually couldn't stop paying the players even after they were caught because they'd signed legal contracts with them and were just as afraid of the kids suing them. What a shitstorm.
The NCAA don't set up shop on campus then decide things are ok...ya'll do know that don't you? :)

Question for you, Arky. Does Dan Mullen really go on recruiting trips to Crater of Diamonds State Park?

A backpack stuffed with money is an OM recruiting tactic. Confirmed.
If NCAA has gotten on the trail of that, OM is toast.

No, they are not that stupid, they pay IMG to sponsor the prospect's tuition and in return, the prospect( or guardian) signs a conditional contract with IMG for future considerations. This could explain the Bo Scarborough rumors. It might be interesting to see how many kids out of IMG academy's first football class, eligible for the NFL, starting this year have agents that are part of IMG .
Look at the relationships between the college coaches and IMG, Freeze and Ole Miss my have gotten sloppy in their dealings.
