How are things down there right now? I know many many people lost everything and I realize this is a sports message board but most of us live in the south and despite bickering over athletics, this was a huge disaster. I'd like to think we can all agree to come together on this topic. Have any of you personally been flooded and are you getting any support down there? I met a guy at a gas station that told me he and 3 buddies were going to caravan some truck filled supplies this weekend so I paid for his gas. He had just purchased a ton of goods at his own expense.

I am also curious about power outages. He said power was still out for many people so he bought battery operated fans and batteries. I saw them. Must have been 20 small fans and that alone had to cost a bundle.

I wasn't personally affected but it's the real deal down here man. A lot of people have literally lost everything they own. We'll be alright though.

That's really sad. You lose everything you worked for and to add insult to injury you lose old family photos that can never be replaced etc. It's going to take a long time for things to get back to normal. Did you have any damage?

I'm up here helping my sister. The amount of people that have their houses completly cleaned out already is staggering. No one is sitting around waiting for someone to tell them what to do. It's quite inspiring.

50,000? Damn! I just can't even imagine that. I'm going to check online and see what funds have been set up. I'll probably use one of the local news websites to find out because unfortunately there is scum out there that will take advantage for person gain. Nothing pissed me off more than what I recall about bogus contracters who ripped off Katrina victims then fled.

I'm extremely lucky that I didn't but I have good friends who have lost their homes after getting 5 ft. of water.

Entire communities have been wiped out.

This flood was devastating.

4 trillion gallons fell on Baton Rouge and surrounding areas.

Like Rise said earlier, its the South. We'll pick up the pieces and bounce back.

I live in BR in a sub of 250 homes. 225 of those homes had 6" to 3' of water for 48 hours before it went down. We were very fortunate as water did not get into our home though we were on an island for 48 hours. Our sub looks like a war zone now as most have gutted their homes these past two days. I am running errands and buying stuff for people I never met until this week. Lots of hurting people in the BR area, but many more are sacrificing to help those hurting.

While searching for fund raising organizations, I came across this. And while I am sick of the overspending by our fed gov't running up the debt on stupid shite, if there is a place to spend money it's in Louisiana. Read below and tell me this does not piss you off, especially knowing they have spent far more on stupid crap.

BATON ROUGE, La.—Gene Broussard just lost his brother, Brett, who died in the floods here. Four feet of water left his home a wreck. And now, more distressing news: The government will pay no more than $33,000 to help him recover.

“That’s not even going to cover repairs to the structure, not to mention the entire contents of the house stacked up by the street soaking wet,” said the 48-year-old, who works for an insulation company. “The government bails out a company or another country, and you’ve got a good section of the state of Louisiana in total loss, and you’re going to offer us $33,000 to fix up our home and replace everything?”

Flying from New Mexico to bham in the morning. When I get back, loading the truck and driving down Friday night to help some friends out Saturday and Sunday.

It just makes me mad to see us throw money at other countries while our own people who play by the rules and got wiped out are told "sorry, pal, we have a cap when it comes to Americans. Good luck, hope you figure things out. Buh bye now."

If this happened to New York, there would be nonstop news coverage and millions donated within 48 hours. We don't need sympathy, we could really use donations. The problem is that it's not a hurricane and it's not New Orleans. It's Baton Rouge, people know we don't flood...so we all thought. This was a truly once in a century flood. Only 13% of Baton Rouge had flood insurance. But I can't say enough about all the locals who helped out using their own boats and supplies. Big thanks to our surrounding states and South Carolina for the help. The south and SEC, we take care of our own.

A couple of my places were starting to flood but I sandbagged and I think they'll be OK. Big tree in backyard fell on the fence. Hoping my SUV isn't damaged from driving through water. I moved back here after my apartment and jobs were wiped out by the tsunami in Japan. Ironic, isn't it?

Unreal. You've been hit twice then. Hate to hear that. I can't get down there right now but would love a legit organization to donate to. I found a list with the Red Cross at the top but I know too much about scandals there to even consider. Yes they do show up and do some good but I want my money to actually go to people who need help without scandals like the one not long ago.

If you know of a good one you'd advise I'd appreciate it. I don't know much about some listed.

By the way, while I realize much of the funding is going to buy food and diapers etc, I wish someone would set up a fund that distributes the money equally for home repairs. Then organize to get the national media to report it. If overseen by a local bank and 2 voluntary CPA firms etc then I think people would feel better about sending money. And of course, nobody needs to be paid 200K as a "CEO" of that fund.

ETA: It's one of the reasons I refuse to have anything to do with the American Cancer Society. If people knew the waste, salaries, excessive fun monies being spent off the backs of donors they'd be pissed off.

I helped gut 2 of those 50,000 homes yesterday. I will never forget the smell. Best way I can describe it is it was like working inside a dumpster full of wet garbage for hours on end. The filthiest environments I've been in by far.

I'm blessed as one of the few in my area of Ascension Parish that did not get water in our house. Power went off Saturday night and came back on Tuesday. Didn't care, stayed home and worked to help neighbors and family.

I helped sandbag others homes from daylight to dark for 3 days, 5 homes in all, but 4 of them got water anyway. It's the very description of a disaster. At one point I was pulling coffins by boat back to a grave sight, I've had airboats down my driveway, and grown men cry in my arms.

But you know what, we're not waiting for assistance although any is welcome. We are housing friends, family, pets, donating supplies, and cooking hot meals after gutting houses all day. Progress has been made already, and we'll be an even stronger community soon.

Thanks to everyone that has helped in any way, we're Louisiana strong together.
