Hey Florida, what's the pre-season feel about McElwain?

What's the attitude like in Gainesville? I mean, I would think people would be optimistic in spite of the obvious pressures on the program from Boom's failure and the implosion Urban Meyer had in his past few years (really unexpected he would punt at Florida and then go on to build a NC program at OSU, right?). But I think there are some positives about McElwain. He had a good balanced program at Colorado State. They beat some quality programs like Washington State, Hawai'i, and Utah State. I say reason to be optimistic, Gaytors .

Jury's super out; people are understandably skeptical about another Saban tree guy and if he tries to run an offense resembling the one he ran at Bama (as opposed to the spread approach he used at CSU) people will be even more skeptical, at the same time he's done some really good things since coming on board as far as filling the massive roster holes the moron left.

That said he was an unimpressive 22-16 at CSU a decent but not great mark, and this season's recruiting is a bit behind where it should be (though he closed strong at the deadline earlier this year) so it's wait and see.

He turned CSU from a 4-8 team to 10-3 in 3 years...

That's an outstanding mark, considering they were 3-9 for 3 consecutive seasons before he got there, and he completely flipped the program around.

4-8
8-6
10-3*

First time since 2002 that they won more than 8 games. Only 5th time in school history to have double digit wins.

10-2. He wasn't there for their bowl loss.

Even better.

There's no question about the job he did at CSU. It was nothing short of amazing.

The question is whether or not he can get the players in the program to buy in to what he's selling.

It's easy to get CSU players to buy into a guy who just won 2 national championships at Bama. Might not be so easy to get players at Florida to buy into a guy from CSU.

His recruiting has been good so far. Patching up the OL has been a miracle. This recruiting class is TBD due to the nature of the offense. The WR hire had me wtf? I hated the OC hire, but hope he will focus solely on QB's rather than play calling. Geoff Collins sounds like a douche with the swag cup non-sense, but if the defense is great who cares. The Rumph hire was great for the DL. I hope the best players play and not the ones that have been there the longest like WM. This year is more about vision and hope. I fully expect UF to be back at the top in 2-3 years and not treating 7 win seasons like SBs like UT, Arky, UK and Vandy do. Of course he may suck and if he does and is fired he can take that blow hard Foley with him.

I think most level-headed people are saying "wait and see."

No one was overly excited about the OC and DC hires, but I think getting Summers to stay coaching OL, and Rumph to coach the DL were big.

People understate, I think, the importance of bringing Randy Shannon to Gainesville. He will be the Co-DC, and LB coach, and he is a fabulous south Florida recruiter. I think that will pay huge dividends for Florida in the short-term at Lb and on defense (he had 5 top 10 defenses when he was DC at Miami in the early 2000's), and in the long-term with recruiting in the state of Florida.

The other thing is that Coach Mac has more than doubled the size of the UF support staff since he arrived last year. This should pay dividends in recruiting, overall team management, and game prep over the last administration.

A troll thread that resulted in solid responses from UF fans. Just another reason UF has the best fans on tRant.

What world are you living in?

Now that that's out of the way, I think Florida might surprise some people. Won't go 10-2 or better but, they can have a pretty respectable season by the end of it all.

Actually for the purpose of the Rant yall have the worst fans. The best fans for the Rant are ones like Tenn fans who get offended when some list puts them as a top 25 all time team instead of a top 15 one and they flame the board for weeks because of it.

Florida fans are so boring that more than one of you likes to play the referee between other Ranters. That shows exactly where yall are mentally, yall are like the cool kid in high school who is FORCED by your mom to do a church overnight because your dorky cousins are going.

Well this whole place is the dorky cousin (fricker) club, and yall are out of place here. GTFO and go slam your cheerleader (ug) dime piece while we argue about Chavis one more time.

I think the vast majority are optimistic about the hire. Muschamp was a complete disaster, so he has that going for him. I think he's quietly had a rather impressive start to his tenure. Did a great job closing in recruiting, he's aggressively worked to improve facilities and addressed immediate needs along the OL. We'll see how it plays out this year, but I feel like this hire is much more like Meyer than Zook.

Wishful thinking on your part. We made it through the Muschamp era, we can make it through anything.

The only staff hire of his I really question (Collins isn't outstanding but was probably the best available, honestly I'd be surprised if he wasn't as good as Muschamp and Strong were the talent makes the defense) is Nussmeier-- if McElwain is going to be the guru with plays etc, he should have gone with a recruiter and if he's going to delegate he should have gone with a better OC.
