Has an OOC game ever cost you a shot at NC/Or been the reason you went?

Was in a conversation about scheduling tough OOC games (I support it) and it brought up some interesting things.

In 2007 VT plays OSU in NC if we don't beat them in regular season. That convincing win is what pushed us to to the top of two loss teams as well.

In 2011 we likely play Oregon instead of Alabama in the NC if we don't beat them in season opener. I do contribute a lot of our success that year to the off season preparation for that game however, and who knows if we win that game in January.

Lsu is on an insane regular season OOC run right now so I know we have only benefited for a while, we are bound to lose one eventually though and I can see it taking a lot of excitement out of the season. Just curious about other fan bases experiences, good and bad.

Man that virginia tech game is one of my favorite LSU games of my lifetime. Very rarely do you dominate a top opponent like we did that night.

04 was the worst year to be a great team in the SEC. The media hype around USC and OU was ridiculous, and that was right before the SEC took over college football.

Even a 1 loss sec champ plays for it all almost any other year.

2014 Indiana.

We wouldn't have beat Bama anyways so it doesn't matter, but we would've been playing for a national title appearance in the SEC Championship if we hadn't lost to Indiana.

I honestly can't remember for sure, but I think OU lost to Oregon a few years back on a bs call by the refs and that game ended up having significant impacts on their post season selection.

Not SEC but one i'll never forget was 2005

OSU played Texas in the shoe and lost in the last few minutes. If OSU wins that game, then PSU, Texas and OSU would all have 1 loss along with USC undefeated

Could have been the difference

Mine too. I absolutely hate Tech, and was living in VA at the time. And it made up(in spades) for sitting in Lane Stadium to witness the arse whooping they gave us in '02.

1967 loss to UCLA. That was our only loss at the time the AP national title was awarded. It was the first game of the year.

USC lost to crappy Oregon State but beat UCLA at the end of the year. They leapfrogged over us in the last week if the season the win the NC even though they had a worse resume.

UT got fricked.

1983 - Only loss was to Texas. Still won national championship with most selectors, but would have also picked up the AP.

1987 - Only loss was to FSU. Probably didn't matter though. OU was defending national champ and preseason #1 and lost to undefeated #2 Miami by about 20 in the Orange Bowl.

2003 - USC already mentioned.

In 1998 we lost to Florida State in the kickoff classic. After we beat KSU in the XII Championship, that early loss to FSU probably kept us out of the MNC. Turn that into a win, and our loss to tu probably wouldn't have mattered.

Anyway, we got our arse handed to us by Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl.

06. They still got their butts beat by Texas though.

My bad, I meant to reply to Warrior Poet about 06 Oklahoma.

2000 Alabama lost to ucla. If they don't lose that game and the other seven games, they probably get a shot.

Not SEC but 01 Colorado lost to Fresno State early in the season. That kept them at #3 behind Nebraska (despite crushing them hth and winning the B12).

The final score was 25-22. Texas scored late to take the lead and the Ohio State tight end dropped a touchdown pass that would have given them a two score lead.

Texas won that night but they didn't beat anyone's butts.
