By this I mean games where a huge underdog fell just short of beating a heavily favored opponent (in an SEC conference game).

A few that come to mind:

1) 2-9 (0-8) Vanderbilt put a scare into #1 ranked Florida back in 1996. Florida was up 28-6 when Vanderbilt scored 15 straight to cut the lead to 28-21 at the start of the 4th quarter. Vandy had two more chances to tie or take the lead in that game, but came up short both times.

2) I think it was 2006?- Auburn vs. South Carolina- some gamecock receiver dropped a wide open, easy as can be touchdown and SC lost the game by 7. 24-17.

I would love for some of you older folks to go deep in your memories. Remember- upsets THAT NEVER WERE. (Goliath still has to be the victor in this thread)

Only one SEC team, but does Troy-LSU count?

That's a good one, but I was hoping for this thread to be more about in-conference upsets that never were. (both teams SEC)

Auburn vs Georgia in 1994. Ended in a tie (23-23), but AU was #3 going into the game. UGA finished 6-4-1, AU finished 9-1-1 and ranked #9 in the country.

Also, 1999 Alabama vs LSU. Alabama came into the game 6-2 and ranked #12. LSU was 2-6 and had lost by brutal margins to Auburn and Kentucky. Alabama had taken a 23-7 lead, but a huge INT return for a TD and a FG with over 7 minutes left in the game had LSU within 6. When Alabama missed a FG with 2:23 left, LSU went 79 yards to the Alabama 1, but fell just short. Josh Booty was stopped at the 1 yard line on a bootleg to the right, as he was turned in mid air while trying to score. Not enough time was left on the clock for another play.

LSU's upset bid almost ended early when Alabama appeared to be going for an INT, but two Bama players both went for the ball and missed the INT, allowing LSU to march.

YouTube Video at the spot of the last play.

2008 SEC championship- Bama ends the 3rd up on a Florida team that had spent the last 10 weeks blowing out ranked SEC teams, in the 4th reality sets in as the defending Heisman trophy winner goes perfect through the air en route to a double digit victory.

I doubt a team going into the game 12-0 beating a team 11-1 would have been a "greatest SEC upset" - even with Florida going into the game a 10 point favorite.

By contrast, the 1999 Alabama/LSU game was decided by a yard and Alabama was a 20 point favorite.

For those curious, here's a historical listing of favorites between 1993 and 2013:

2009, Arkansas at Florida. The game where we got completely and utterly fricked by the officials to the point where the whole crew was suspended the next week.

We lost 23-20. We were 24 point underdogs.

1994 Bama-29 MSU-25

Now, MSU wasn't terrible that year(finished 8-3,6-2), and the game was at home. (11-0,8-0), however, was ranked #6 in the nation and undefeated. They would go on to lose to Florida by a point in the first SECCG in Atlanta.
State was 7-2 entering the game while Bama was 9-0 and a 3 point road favorite. It was on ABC, and State led most of the game. In fact, with about 3 minutes left State led 25-22 and faced a 3rd and short. State had the largest OLine by weight in the country, but Bama held them about a foot short. State punts and "Lucky" Jay Barker took Bama down the field and scored a TD with under a minute remaining. If State would have held on they would have eventually won the West and broke Bama's stranglehold on the Western Division.

Was it Arkansas that had multiple, terrible phantom calls to save Tebow and the Gators during one of their title runs?

Our depth lost us that game. Most of our defensive starters played the entire game.
