I think either would have resulted in a first down. I believe he was 2-3 yards short.

It was 3rd and four or so, but I just don't like 15 yard penalties for brushing the facemask.

The pictures above don't look like brushing. However, anything left up to judgement (brushing vs non-brushing) usually leads to bad calls from the refs. Make it consistent so there isn't any room for debate.

It wasn't close to brushing...he hooked it and pulled it, but let go quickly...

I might be wrong, but I think they changed it so that brushing the facemask won't get called at all. But, they still call the barely touching facemasks.
