For the last 8 yrs a team from the SEC or a deep south team (fsu) has won the national championship. I think that if that dominance were to continue other parts of the country would sooner or later just stop watching, making CFB a regional game, so maybe it is for the best.

This was already starting to happen. CFB absolutely needs the midwest fanbase. It is the second biggest regional base. The west coast and east coast already don't give a frick, outside of a few select college towns and smallish fan communities.

Sure why not

It made the playoff format look genius and who the committee chose other than FSU but it was hard to keep out an undefeated team. TCU vs Oregon would have been a better game.

I just don't see that happening. The great thing about college football is the tradition of the various schools. Northwestern people still flock to games even though they have been relevant for a few years over the last 20 years. There are many more examples I could use. The great thing about college football is the college part of it. Fans of college football that I know are just fans of the college game, in general. We all have our colleges, but we enjoy watching other colleges and other regions play the game.

It's good that Oregon will romp and secure a natty for the west. Maybe then that region will give a rip about CFB.

Northwestern survives because of the Big Ten. It is a small school with a small fanbase. They get to share revenue, however, with Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Penn State (etc.).

Those are the schools and the fanbases that make the midwest the #2 region for CFB fandom in America. If the sport loses them, it will become a regional thing like baseball or hockey.

I honestly see a Big 10 revival with a Harbaugh vs Urban rivalry. If the Big 12 can gain a few good schools and not implode, they have the brand names to be in there as well.

So yes. Parity and competition for all.

I agree that it's best for the sport, but the SEC isn't going anywhere. I know recruiting rankings aren't the be-all end-all, but it's an indicator that we can use.

Of the Top 25 (according to 247 at the moment):

10 of the top 25 are from the SEC
ACC: 4
Pac 12: 4
Big 12: 3
Big 10: 3

The talent will be there for the SEC. It's time to get back to smashmouth football though.

So do I. As a Wisconsin resident, I hope the Badgers can keep pace with the coming arms race. My guess is they won't. Specifically, this god damn team can't recruit a QB to save its life. Anthony Jennings would be an upgrade for them.

Past two days have certainly changed the narrative a LOT on SEC dominance for now.

4 SEC West teams that were all ranked in the top 4 at some point by the selection committee all lost in just a few days.

I don't think anybody is saying the SEC will sink into obscurity. I think other conferences have leveled the playing field.

I honestly think that something clicked for Oregon after two losses in a row to Auburn and LSU - both times they got outplayed physically. Now they have a different kind of athlete on their lines and it shows.

Ohio State - well their coach already had the formula to success, didn't he? Ohio State looks very different from Tressel's teams. They are more athletic and more physical.

I think TCU and Baylor are still system teams, but they are also building the kind of program that Oregon is building. NFL talent is moving through those places now.

Yes. Exactly right. I agree and believe that not having an SEC team in the final is best for the SEC and college football in the long run. Teams need to be hungry, as do fanbases. It is better when there is competition around the whole country instead of just in one region.

I am VERY happy to watch Oregon and Ohio State play. An Alabama-FSU final would have been horrible for the game.

I think overall it is probably good that the SEC lost this one. I have to agree with the reason you mentioned.

Probably. CFB needs other parts of the country to be more interested in CFB than they are and them being in the dance helps pick up those viewers. The last thing we need is for CFB to become completely regional and it's in danger of that for several reasons. SEC dominance is a part of it but not the only reason.
