Gonna miss listening to iconic voices like Musburger and Verne

Regardless of their lessening skills and irritation at times in their later years, they went hand and hand with CFB.
"You are looking live", the SEC on CBS music, Verne's chortle, Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried and anything that came out of Keith Jackson's mouth are what I think of when I think of college football.
We're basically down to just the SEC on CBS music at this point.

Al Michaels is the last of the truly great announcers left, although I really like Nessler.

Yes, CBS snagging Nessler was a coup. He'll be great next year.
I also really like Sean McDonough, always have going back to his old SEC on CBS days.

I really liked Sean McDonough. Since he got switched to the NFL, he might as well be gone too in my book

People said "there will never be another great one" after Keith Jackson left too.
I'll miss Verne, but I'm interested to see who rises to the top next.

There still hasn't been one like him. Keith Jackson is the gold standard of college football announcers and always will be in my book. He was the absolute best at introducing a game.

No doubt. Nessler and Fowler are obviously very good. I like Tessitore quite a bit, too.

There's just something about the previous generation that is missing in the current one. I don't know if it is the way those guys grew up, listening to radio calls for everything and relying on description more than we are, or if maybe there was less structure and corporate culture in it back then that allowed them to grow up and do their thing.........not sure. But it's clearly different.
There just aren't radio or TV people like there were 25 years ago. Keith Jackson, Vin Scully, Brent Musburger, Al Michaels, Verne Lundquist on tv. Larry Munson, Jon Ward, Fyffe, Jack Buck, Skip Carry, etc on radio (and TV).
Their replacements, while some are pretty good, just don't weave slight homerism in with colorful description.

There's just a lack of personality with a lot of them. Feels like most guys ESPN brings in now seem to be cut from the same cloth.

Yep - and people just, in general, aren't as good as colorfully and masterfully using the English language to describe things like they used to be.

I mean, people on TV and Radio can make you interested in a game or team (or at least contribute to it).
There is no doubt my enjoyment in watching and listening to the Braves is not nearly as high as it was 15 years ago, and that is directly tied to who does their games on radio and TV.

Umm...I think that has more to do with the fact that the Braves aren't a perennial dominant team like they were in the 90s.

Most of the newer guys are very well spoken and are very good at what they do, but it's almost like they lack the enthusiasm for calling a game that someone like Jackson or Lundquist had.
Dave Pasch is a good example. He's an excellent play by play guy. He is very articulate and very knowledgeable about the teams/players in his broadcasts, but it seems like he's just there to do his job and get the hell out of town. With Keith Jackson, it seemed like he appreciated every single moment of every game he was ever at.
It's hard to explain but that's the best I can do right now.

I think anybody who has watched sports for a number of years knows exactly what you are talking about.
Same with Mike Breen on ESPN NBA games. He's very good, very professional, but I don't get the same feeling I used to when I watched Albert on NBC.

Hahaha - well, I felt the same way 3-4 years ago before the bottoming out period started. And I still watch every game and have season tickets, but if a game gets out of hand I mute it or move on to something else. I didn't do that with Skip and Pete. Hell, blowouts were Skip's time to shine.

Speaking of announcers, your user name pays homage to the absolute worst broadcast team I've ever listened to. Dave Neal is ok, but listening to Dave Baker made me want to claw my eardrums out.

Well, at least we had the great picture provided by the two Turner castaway cameras that JP used for all those years. But even with that, JP was ours. It was uniquely us. Now everything is on ESPN with the same people and the same graphics and this mass, uniform look and feel.
It's great for the SEC to be big and awesome, but I do miss the old regional conference sometimes.
