Olympic Stadium in Montreal was supposed to be able to be lifted - never was.

I don't know how I'ld feel being there while a big cement section was held over my head by cables if it were.

I've been to countless HS State Championship games, 2 SECCGs, 1 Chick Fil A Kickoff in the Dome. Had some good times in there for sure

Not even a UGA fan and I've been there to watch them play in Athens and the Dome.

The experience is very different in the dome. I really like it and have been to hundreds of games in Auburn/every where else

I have been a few times for falcons games and peach bowls. It's a solid venue and I think that it is silly they are replacing it. But I am looking forward to seeing the new stadium.

It was built about seven years before the retractable roof arenas full of amenities started going up. It became obsolete pretty fast.

There is nothing "wrong" with the Dome. It's a well maintained, well run venue. However, it is not an elite venue and will never host another Super Bowl.

Arthur has money, the city has hotel/motel money, the region is rolling in dough right now, why the frick not.

I've had some great (and not so great) memories in the Dome between the Birds and Alabama, but I'm looking forward to Home Depot World. It is going to be one of a kind (for better or worse, we'll find out).

Hard to believe GA dome is outdated
Same thing with Turner Field

Both are not that old

Amazing Superdome is still around

Especially since the Georgia Dome is better than the Superdome.

They aren't, but compare them to all the other stadiums in their leagues

Here are the stadiums older than Turner Field (1996) in 4 main categories :

Classic Old
Wrigley Field (1914)
Fenway Park (1912)

Old, but substantially renovated
Kauffman Stadium (1973)
Dodger Stadium (1962)
Angel Stadium (1966)

Stadiums teams wish they could replace or are replacing/renovating
Rangers Stadium (1994)
Oakland Coliseum (1966)
Tropicana Field (1990)

Stadiums from same era as TF similar
Skydome/Rogers Centre (1989)
US Cellular Field (1991)
Camden Yards (1992)
Progressive Field/Jacobs Field (1994)
Coors Field (1995)

Skydome is unique, US Cellular is just bland and boring (like TF), Camden Yards is the gold standard and Jacobs/Coors were built specifically for baseball and copied a lot of Camden.

Turner Field was built with baseball in mind (secondarily) but as Olympic Stadium first. It has been a fine facility, but it really is older and more bland than most MLB stadiums (which isn't a reason to tear it down, but adds some context to why).

The only NFL stadiums older than the Dome (1992)
Soldier Field - 1924
Oakland Coliseum - 1966
Qualcomm Stadium - 1967
Arrowhead Stadium - 1972
Ralph Wilson Stadium - 1975
Superdome - 1975
Miami Stadium - 1987

Solider Field and Miami have/are undergoing massive renovations. The Superdome has had renovations/fixes. The Raiders and Chargers want to move because their stadiums suck so badly.

So really, the only 3 stadiums in the league that teams are "happy in" that are older than the Dome are Arrowhead, Ralph Wilson and the Superdome.

Add to that the fact that Atlanta is a big event town that wants Super Bowls, and it becomes fairly obvious why they wanted a new stadium.

I think I was at that one too. Preseason game against the Eagles? Chris Miller hit Mike Haynes for a long touchdown if I remember correctly. And MC Hammer and his posse was there and did a couple of songs either pregame or at halftime.

Trying to remember all of the things I have been to there.
Several Falcons games, at least five, probably more.
Three SEC Championship games (97, 2000 and 2004).
Two CFA kickoff games (Auburn/Clemson and Tenn/NC State)
Six Peach Bowls (will be seven this year with the playoffs)
High School Playoffs 2005
Olympic celebration 1992 when they brought the official flag from Barcelona to Atlanta (GHW Bush spoke, and it was strange seeing the secret service snipers walking along the catwalks in the roof).

The SuperCross Event in February is the final scheduled event in 2017. I will be there.

Perhaps the best $100 million ever invested by the state of Georgia.

Without the Dome Atlanta does not get the Olympics,SECCG,2 Super Bowls,Final Fours,
SEC Basketball Tourny and countless other events.
And probably losses the Falcons to Jacksonville.

Those events (mostly the Olympics and Centennial Park)
completely revitalized that area of downtown to west midtown. Not a big government type but in this case the investment was well worth it.
