Geoff Collins - MSU fans or anyone else, is he any good?

I have to say I don't know much about him so any input would be appreciated. We have become accustom to having a pretty good defense and a shitty offense, and I was wondering if we are going back the other way and going to have to outscore everyone.

There were times last season when I thought we had the best DC in football.
There were other times when I thought our DC was a potato.

Feast or famine. We had a couple of games like that.
I thought he was supposed to be good, but statistically he was below avg. Of course stats can help a team like UF look good on Defense because everyone gets conservative after they see we can't score.

I didn't think he always had the best personnel on the field at certain crunch times. He plays a bend but don't break style that will allow yards in between the 20's, but bow up from there. Like one of the above posters stated, sometimes I thought he was one of the best, but other times one of the worst.

This was mostly due to giving up a lot of big plays, which was our achilles heel last year.

He was a good "director of player development" or "director of football operations" for us (I forget).

His goal line and red zone defense was outstanding. But if your opposing QB is capable of completing a forward pass in the middle of the field and you have slow corners and safeties it's gonna be for 6 every time. And his platoon substitutions (1A 1B) bullshite means that your best players only see the field 50% of the time on defense.

Didn't State rave over this when it was talked about?

Some State fans might have, but not me. I could never understand the purpose of not having an MLB like McKinney on the field as much as possible.

Started out like Pruitt did at Alabama. As a personnel assistant. Looks to be a solid enough defensive coach. Was good at UCF and Mississippi State.

Also worth noting that his stint at state was the longest he's been anywhere since like 1990, and it was only 2.5 years, so I wouldn't expect him to be around for too long.
I didn't like his defense but overall he was effective, I am happy to have Diaz back because he was better when he was here. However, Collins 1A/1B may have more success as he should have a little more depth at UF.

He has a good football mind and should be a plus recruiter at UF. Be ready for some CB blitz and he also likes to move ends inside and DT's outside. He prefers run stopping DL's compared to negative play type DL's. I'm not so convinced the 1A/1B idea was Collins, due to us still implementing it in the Orange Bowl when Collins was already gone. He likes for every d lineman to be able to play every D-line position, every linebacker to be able to play every linebacker position and same goes for DB's. I think he will be good for UF and also has many previous connections in Florida for recruiting purposes.

I personally am glad y'all have him for our game in The Swamp

With Randy Shannon being part of the defensive staff, he could change some of the bad habits Coach Collins have. Coach Shannon will have a lot of input in how things are done.

His SwagJuice might be a conflict with Gatorade

All I can tell you is I heard a rumor he drink 84 Dews on a cross country recruiting trip, dude can knock em back. He'll bring the "psycho" to your defense, you'll be wanting to kill your friends after his fourth quarter game plans...holy shite!

He will have a lot more to work with at UF so I think he will be fine.

Ehhhhhhh,. That isn't the issue, even if true. I reserve the right to get your feedback after first game losing pass with VH3 on the bench to make my call.

Watch our UAB game last year. You can have him.

The stats look like he was OK - his defense gave up a crap ton of big plays last year, but still, in a tough division, only gave up 23 PPG. 21 PPG the year before.
Without him in the bowl MSU was utter garbage.
He isn't overly impressive, but he isn't terrible either. Honestly, I kind of wonder why he is the DC and not Shannon. Shannon has a much better resume as a defensive coordinator.
But he is the "co-coordinator", so I think with the two of them together, they should be able to put togheter a solid defense. especially with UFs talent.
