Gary Drinkel's Press Conference regarding prolific QB Drew Lock

Drew Lock, who began August as Mizzou’s No. 6 quarterback, climbed to No. 2 with a prolific preseason camp and will play this fall in an undetermined role as the backup to junior starter Maty Mauk, Pinkel confirmed.

Mauk has been MU’s starting quarterback in 14 wins against four losses the last two years, and Pinkel insisted Lock’s promotion has no impact on Mauk’s status.

“This has nothing to do with Maty,” Pinkel said Monday. “This is all about … if something happens to Maty, the first thing you ask yourself is, ‘Who do we think is the best player to put in for our team?’ We really do that for every position.”

Missouri could conceivably name Lock the No. 2 quarterback and still intend to preserve his year of eligibility by keeping him on the bench, but that’s not the approach Pinkel’s staff decided to take. Lock will play, just as Chase Daniel played in 2005 as a freshman backup to Brad Smith … as Blaine Gabbert played in 2008 as a freshman backup to Daniel … as James Franklin played in 2010 as a freshman backup to Gabbert.

In all three cases, the freshman backup took over as Mizzou’s starting quarterback the next season, but with Mauk only a junior — and unlikely to enter the 2016 NFL draft — a Mauk-Lock combination or competition could resurface next fall. Lock’s promotion also pushed backup candidates Eddie Printz and Marvin Zanders further down the chart. They’re listed as even for the No. 3 job.

Asked if promoting Lock to No. 2 could make things uncomfortable with the other quarterbacks, Pinkel replied, “It doesn’t matter if it’s uncomfortable. You have to do the right thing for your team. It’s uncomfortable if you let all these other things concern you.”

Yes, but what happens if Mauk struggles with his accuracy, as he did during last year’s midseason funk? With Lock in the bullpen, will Pinkel have a shorter leash with Mauk? He wouldn’t entertain those questions.

“You guys are making this … this has nothing to do with Maty,” Pinkel said. “This is the guy, if (Lock) has to go in, it’s the right thing to do for our football team. That’s what it’s about. Don’t confuse it.”

“If something happens to Maty, who’s the best guy you can put in?”

Lock’s pure passing skills would push him to the top of a lot of SEC depth charts. “He handles pressure well,” Pinkel said. “He’s extremely accurate. I mean, really accurate. He has a lot of poise, a lot of intangibles. He’ll keep getting better and better as we go.”

Think of it like this:

Chase Daniel (2007 Heisman Finalist - Runner Up) was Mizzou's GOAT...until Drew Lock showed up to camp and convinced the coaches that he is the best QB that they've ever seen.

Best...QB...they've...ever....seen.

He's a true freshman and isn't being redshirted but rather confidently placed at #2 behind Mauk, which Pinkel hasn't done before.

Word is that he's so good that he'll replace Mauk before the end of the season. Essentially, it's do or die for Mauk. Mauk is on a very short leash. If he has a game where he's going 3 and out over and over...Lock is coming in.

And if Lock comes in and performs as expected, he'll replace Mauk as the starting QB.

I was supposed to go out of town this weekend. Once I heard that Lock was listed at #2 on the depth chart, I immediately changed my mind. On top of that, I stumbled upon box seats that my boss decided not to use! CLUTCH

I like to meet you at a game sometime. Would you be willing to shotgun a beer or two with me sometime this season?

I won't be at this weekend's game, but I usually attend at least one early season home game. I'll post it on the Mizzou Board.

I will 100 percent be in Nashville to attend the Mizzou/Vandy game in October.

Hoping to attend the Mizzou/Arkansas game in Fayetteville as well but not sure about my schedule just yet.

Yeah, those are the two away games I'm planning on attending as well. My schedule is kind of crazy, so I won't know until it comes closer to time. I will be at all the home games. I will keep you posted though.

The media is just trying to fuel a quarterback controversy.

I think Maty Mauk will be better this year and has nothing to worry about for now.. As I remember it the only offensive production Mizzou had against Alabama was when Maty started free style'in. I hope the staff learned Missouri can't play Old Man Football and expect to win against Bama, Auburn or Georgia.

Drew Locke had more passing yards in the final fall scrimmage than the other three qb's combined so he earned his spot at No. 2.

With a little offensive innovation from the coaches Maty should be fine. You know, offensive innovation like Alabama, of all teams, showed in the championship game.
