Gary Danielson re Stidham, just stated he has serious questions with Malzhan having success with his offense without a running QB, or rather a dual threat type ala Newton and Marshall. On the Chuck Oliver show at SEC Media Days, today. He was responding to Stidham hype by the show's host. I expected him to get all giddy about Stidham, but nope.

Stidham is considered a dual threat QB.

And his offense was humming along fine with a healthy Sean White, who was a pocket passer.

I think that the new coordinator will have more to do with that than in past years, but I would 100% agree if this was the old Gus offense (which it may still heavily favor). What made Gus' offense great was having a mashing o-line that could control the center for 2-3 yards every play and a scary running QB. That gave the entire TE/WR corp wide open 1 on 1 matchups everywhere, enabling huge plays in the passing game. If they couldn't mash the middle on the dive play and their QB wasn't a scary run threat, teams could keep guys back and disrupt their elementary route trees.

However, Stidham does have running ability (not Marshall or Cam, but solid) and their offense will be a bit different this year.

I'll give GD the benefit of the doubt, because he (and everyone else) haven't seen a Gus offense with an extremely accurate and potent passer such as Stidham. Throw in the fact that he can run better than some think, it could work really well. I have no issue with him being reluctant to buy the hype though.

the did discuss Auburn backs, etc, caught tail end of program when talking more about Stidham and Malzhan's offensive style and type of QB it takes to make it go full bore like with Newton and Marshall.

Against defense in which they could control the LOS (State, Ole Miss, Arkansas). I'm not sure it would have been as productive against UGA, Alabama and Oklahoma.

hopefully, doublebubble will just stand on the sideline and chew his gum, and let a real OC run the show.....doublebubble is hanging by a thread, and if he screws up this football team, which should be very good, that thread will be snipped

Hard to say, but no way to know for sure.
Stidham is a great deal more mobile than White. And while he's not nearly as fast as Marshall or a Cam, you'd have to think he will be a better passer anyway.
Lindsay was brought in to develop more balance in the form of a passing game.

Yep, which I why I think it's hard to pin the futurw on the past failures. It probably won't be the same offense. Similar, but different. And, like you said, Stidham isn't a tree.

In the option, you don't need a super fast QB to be successful. Stidham ran well under Briles' Veer and Shoot offense. I think he'll be successful in Gus' system because now there's a passing threat including in the option

I'm cool with Gary's take on the situation. BELIEVE me, I am not going to buy into hype about at QB until it is proven. "Once bitten, Frazier/Johnson shy"

Another case of the media repeating something they heard someone else say and not doing their own research. Look at Gus's Offense at Tulsa (lead the nation) and his first at AU with Todd.

Yeah. I'm sure Danielson hasn't seen any Auburn football with Gus running the offense. He's only been covering SEC football since 2006.
