Some of these kids don't have father figures. Closest thing they have is the coach that's been recruiting them since their soph year in HS.

Who has become a father figure only because they want that player to come to their school. Then take another job the year after. B/S. If I was a recruit and didnt personally know a coach until recruitment began I would eliminate any snake in the grass that showed up at a funeral for a family member.

This will turn into a shite-show, especially near signing day. Packed funeral homes of college coaches that are only there so they aren't the coach that didn't show up.

Depends: Does Ann Arbor have any quality plots left?

Harbaugh to recruit: "Listen here, Daquan. Your grandma over there isn't getting any younger. Hell, she's probably not making it past the next signing day. So, how about you announce your commitment to play football at Michigan from her very own burial plot in Ann Arbor! It's a great plot, really, and don't let this get back to the NCAA or anything but maybe we can even get her a quality headstone with any engraving she wants on it? Hell, I'll even deliver the eulogy! And that night, I'm thinking spooky cemetery slumber party! Now, you aren't going to find THAT kind of OV in the SEC, are ya?!"

I'm all for coaches attending if it's a player on their team/former player and the player wants them there but when attending a recruits funeral just seems wrong IMO.

I think it depends on the situation. Stoops and Co. had to apply for a waiver from the NCAA to honor DeAntre Turman when he died in his HS practice so they could send a formal offer (they had already verbaled and was his first) to his parents since they were in the process of doing so when he died. Some of the red tape is ridiculous.

If the family is comfortable with a coach they've been in contact with attending their son's funeral or that of a family member then so be it. They do actually develop relationships with these people during recruitment.

Then let their high school coach go who spends every day with them. This should be off limits to every coach recruiting that player. It's reduce loud this had to be a rule.

I can think of one situation that would be an exception to what you're talking about. CBJ recruited and coach Ralph David Abernathy IV at Cinci and later at UT when he trasnfered as a Grad Student. He is also extremely close with the Abernathy family and recruited Micah Abernathy to UT. Had something tragic happened to Micah when he was being recruited then I think it would've been appropriate for him to attend a funeral.

That said, that seems like an exceptional circumstance. Even with the rule change it seems like it would be inappropriate for a coach to attend. There are exceptions beyond one like that of course but generally it just seems like a coach would be putting a sign out that said 'look at me, I care!' or otherwise angling for attention (and you know some coaches won't miss a funeral for anyone attending recruit-rich High Schools).
