College baseball is one of the greatest venues for riding the opposing team's players. A thread on one of the Razorback boards talked about how they really seemed to get into the heads of some of the UGA outfielders this weekend. Reminded me of one of the funniest instances I witnessed when I was in Fayetteville several years ago, coincidentally it was against an UGA team too. Got me wondering what some of the funniest things you ever heard at a basball game. Here's mine and I'll hang up and listen...

Funniest thing I ever heard at a baseball game was also against Georgia, but this was about 12 or 13 years ago at Baum. UGA had a freshman starting at Shortstop. We had a doubleheader this Saturday. In game 1, we won, thanks to a pair of errors this kid made at short. He made those errors early in the game, so every time he came to the plate after that, and every time he fielded a ball, the group I was with, sitting right on top of the UGA dugout, would chant "E-6! E-6! E-6" Well, we were obviously getting to this kid. So...when the starting lineups were announced for game #2, they announced a different kid at shortstop. We all boooed and started chanting "We Want E-6!"

After a couple of minutes of that, this guy in a UGA shirt and hat came down and told us to knock it off because (and he turned and pointed to this lady a few rows back) that woman up there is his mother. So, the guy sitting next to me turns around and points at her and says, "So YOU'RE the one who taught him how to field!" Funniest thing I ever heard.

I actually don't think what he said to the mom was any worse than, "You throw like a girl."

Seems to me, any time you go into someone else's ballpark, it's expected you're going to hear good natured ribbing toward the other team. And his mom should know it happens. For her to ask some college kid to stop picking on her baby was not a smart move. The smartass remark the kid made back to her was not vulgar, not foul, and I thought it was quick and funny.

One person's funny is another person's offensive, I guess. Would not have offended me one bit of it had happened the other way around. The only way I would have been upset is if I was E-6 and I found out my mommy had been fighting my battles for me in the stands.

Alabama was at Miss. State last year and Mark Gottfried was in the middle of his personal hell that he caused by indiscriminately porking coeds.

A Moo U supporter on the second row behind Bama's bench maybe 15 feet from Gottfried was on his arse ALL NIGHT. I know Gottfried heard every bit of it. Overheard were the following classics:

-Gottfried, where's Elizabeth (his wife) tonight?
-Hey, get your black book ready, who you shacking up with tonight? (towards the end of the game)

And the absolute best because it referenced a rumor that Gottfried had gotten busy on the golf course at Old Colony:

-Hey Gottfried, congrats, I heard you hit a hole in one at Old Colony. That one got Gottfried to turn around and give the guy the stink eye.

Back when I was in school and Will Hunt (his 1st 2 years) was rather overweight.

Guy was on him all game for being huge. After the game the players were walking out to center field to hear it from Skip and the dude in the crowd yelled..."Hey Hunt, you better hurry...the buffet closes in 15 minutes". Even the other players were chuckling.

Hunt proceeded to lose a bunch of weight over that summer

Notorious group of hecklers called the Antlers at the old Hearne Center at Mizzou once had a Domino's pizza delivered to Oliver Miller on the bench when we played up there.

Also, after Todd Day spent half a basketball season on suspension after his role in an alleged dorm rape incident, most student sections at away games would chant, "No Means No" when Todd was at the free throw line.

Worst i've heard was the at the Miami/Ole Miss super regional a few years back (not like it worked cause we still lost) but it was pretty good stuff.

Most of it had a lot to do with them being from Cuba and their rafts.

Tech/UGA game in Athens one year and the announcer asked everyone to stand for the Alma Mater to be played for UGA...Tech fan a few rows down started screaming, "Old McDonald had a farm..." for the entire song. It was great.

Gotta love SEC hecklers - a large portion of which probably wasn't even good enough to play high school ball much less face the rigors of college athletics while maintaining your school work. Unless you've put the work and time in being part of a team, I guarantee the players know how to tune that crap out!

What about the racial heckling MSU fans spewed on Joey Belle back in the day - and he went to confront them which led to Bertman kicking him off the team.

Years ago at the Old Box, Fla's HC had a well known drinking problem. Everytime he walked out to the 3rd base coach's box, a group of fans stood up & rang a bunch of bells, signaling Happy Hour. For all 3 games. Every time Jake Gibbs went to the coach's box, fan would hold up a tape recording of Cannon's TD run. A Bama player was a clone of Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillys & everytime he stepped out of the dugout the whole wkend the left field bleachers would break out in the show's theme song.

About 5 or 6 years ago there was a player on the Minnesota Twins that we managed to piss off. He was kind of fat so we nicknamed him "Bratwurst Boy" and then we heckled him because he had a big hole in his pants right on his butt where you could see through to his briefs. Eventually, our whole section picked up on the heckling and we received quite a few death stares from him for the rest of the game. It's was quite satisfying to get a reaction out of a normally calm major league player.

Another time, at a women's soccer game (no men's soccer), the goalie's shirt kept coming untucked, so we kept yelling at her to tuck it in. Eventually, she started worrying too much about keeping her jersey tucked in and allowed the ball to go straight between her legs for a goal. It must have been very embarrassing for her.
