#2 Texas A&M vs #18 Arkansas in Little Rock. Even at 10-0 and 6-0 in the SWC the Aggies had to win this game to go to the Cotton Bowl. The SWC had a "most recent appearance rule" and in the event of an Arkansas win, there would be a 3-way tie for SWC Champion with the Aggies,Hogs and Texas Longhorns.Texas had last played after the 1973 season. Texas A&M had last played after the 1967 and Arkansas hadn't gone to the Cotton since after the 1965 season.

ABC had gotten the two to move this to the first week of December. A 7 point underdog,Arkansas scored right before halftime to go up 7-0. Arkansas scored 24 in the second half to win 31-6. A&M had 9 fumbles, losing 5 of them.

Since A&M was 2nd behind Ohio State, in all likelihood with UCLA upsetting Ohio State in a rematch from the regular season in the Rose Bowl, A&M would have beaten Georgia as easily as Arkansas did in the Cotton and been crowned national champ.

Instead they were sent to the Liberty and were trounced by Southern Cal, 20-0 in John McKay's last game as Trojan coach.

Sarge referring to your team as daddy only works if your team has actually beaten the other team.

Eh, there's no guarantee they would've beaten UGA.

#2 Texas A&M vs #18 Arkansas in Little Rock

A very different era. Consider that the game was played in Little Rock, which, at the time, all big Razorback games were played in.

It shouldn't have even been played then. The game was scheduled for earlier in the season but moved because of TV concerns. Back then you only had a handful of games on TV so a marque match up, and this was most certainly one, that happened to fall on a day loaded with other big match ups could get moved.

A&M's starting QB went out in the Texas game with a back injury and an Arkansas team that finished #3 in the country in Frank Broyles last season as a head coach took the Aggies to the woodshed.

Arkansas, Texas, and Texas A&M all finished the season at 10-2 that year. Which is pretty darn impressive. Unfortunately part of the reason for their great records is the 4th best team in the SWC that year was Texas Tech who owned a less then impressive 6-5 record. The other teams... well... they were pretty bad.
