At first I was like, "Man the frick up, Robert, and pay for your damn kids". Then I read this

Man, frick that, $20K a month in alimony, for 2 kids?
Take care of your babies, Robert, and get a better attorney.

quote:
Meachem agreed to pay Rhodes alimony of $20,000 ??per month since the two officially divorced back in 2015. Of the $588,000 he should have paid up to this point for his two kids, only about $200,000 had been received.

Alimony needs to be abolished.

Or at least thoroughly re-examined and reformed.

He should have just bought her off up front.

that's alimony and sounds like he agreed to do it. child support generally has a cap, regardless of how much money you make. in tn the max you can be ordered to pay in child support is $2100/mo per child (in TN at least).

Or more likely, she had a better attorney than him.

no it doesn't. so you're saying a lifetime stay at home mom should be kicked to the curb if her husband of 25 years decides he wants a divorce. it's called detrimental reliance. if a husband doesn't want to get stuck with alimony, maybe not let your wife not work during the course of your marriage. that just opens the door for alimony. and in this case, this was a result of a settlement.

highly doubtful. he just made a shite load of money and she did not. Any property acquired or money earned during the course of the marriage is viewed as a marital asset. Meachum signed his huge contract during the marriage, making that big signing bonus and all he's earned marital. It is what it is.

Come on now, you don't think divorce attorneys were lined up around the block to take her case?

Is she an adult? I am for equality, and not when it is just convenient. An adult should never be forced by law to take care of another adult.

What are you laughing at? I am fine with any assets acquired during marriage being split, but a monthly payment post marriage is unethical

Somebody got raked in a divorce.

no it's not. I'll paint you a picture. Husband and wife mutually agree they want the wife to stay at home to raise the kids. They are married for 15 years. Husband makes all the money, supports the family, etc. During this 15 years wife's employability gets lower and lower as the years pass with no work history. After 15 years, Husband decides he wants a divorce. So basically the wife has detrimentally relied on the husband, through their mutual agreement during the marriage, not to work and thus making her future employment options slim to none. During that time husband has established his career and advanced his career. SO you think "because she's an adult" she should just be kicked to the curb and left with half of whatever they have in the bank account (which may be nothing)? That, my friend, is unethical. If you don't want that type of obligation, don't get married or don't let your wife be a stay at home mom. Or don't get divorced. The laws are there for a reason and they are non unethical at all. Generally speaking, unless it's a very long term marriage, you end up settling on transitional alimony, which is set for a definite period of time to transition the other party into a position where they can fully support themselves. I doubt Meachum agreed to pay her alimony forever.
But please continue to downvote my posts out of ignorance to the laws and why the exist in the first place.
