Former USC Pitcher Michael Roth was a target for a catfisher.

Makes you think. Perhaps Teo really was a victim here who was targeted for future blackmailing.
At first I thought no way he's a victim, but after hearing about this catfishing thing I think it's logical to assume that, being a Mormon, he was just gullible and truly believed he had a deep relationship.
Michael Roth, by all accounts, is a pretty sharp guy and even he was led on for that long before finally calling the catfisher out on it. It's not a stretch to assume someone more gullible would fall for it.

Which just goes to show us how much more jaded, cautious and cynical National Championship caliber athletes are compared to the fraudsters in South Bend and their boy Manti Te'o.
Te'o could not have been as stooopid as he appears to have been.
Personally, I liked the way Roth played it. And I had heard about this happening to Roth from Adam Matthews when he was home with Bradly and one of our other local Rawls kids. From what I understand the team had a ball with it and she was a frequent guest on the speaker-phone segment at Roth's apartment.

On a somewhat related note, any info pertaining to whether or not Mike Patrick and Orel hershisher have stopped slobbering all over Roth's nuts?

Roth never attempted to make his relationship public, nor did he embellish it with claims of meetings, nor did he let the story continue well after he knew it was a hoax.
Even if he wasn't in on the thing from the start, T'eo certainly knew great parts of the story he was telling to anybody who would listen were lies.

Orel never did, not once. Matter of fact he was too busy making warbling sounds with UCLA's pitcher's nutsacks in his mouth to do much intelligent talking one way or the other.
It's a well-known fact that Hershisher is not a Gamecock fan because Gamecock fans absolutely dogged his sorry arse for the past three years in Omaha and on twitter.

Actually he is thinking of..."you've gotta hear this story, Joey Pankake, born on national pancake day, hits a homerun on pancake day. Then he goes to IHOP and has what??? Pancakes"

True, but Roth seems like a pretty sharp guy who has probably had plenty of relations with girls and wouldn't need to perpetuate an online relationship. He has all he wants right at home at USC. Ever been to Notre Dame? The pickings are slim. The catfisher's facebook pictures of "Lennay" were attractive, unusually attractive at Notre Dame.
If we are to believe Teo really did get duped and he really is that gullible (again, being Mormon and not having had typical relationships), then it's possible that he innocently brought up a girlfriend in an interview with the Notre Dame paper who also happened to die along with his grandmother and the media took it and ran with it. At that point, he couldn't slow the runaway train down and had to play along with the media's sensationalism.
Hard to believe I know. Just trying to think of a possible explanation that would rationalize such a level of naivety. That is the official story afterall.
Still doesn't explain his father meeting the girl in Hawaii of course.

Or the university sending a videographer to shoot a feature on an alum's charity fund-raiser in 'her' memory and posting it on their website a mere 2 days before the deadspin story broke - which was nearly three weeks after the university says they knew the truth.
They were all in on it at a very early date.

A month goes by. I was sitting in the business building library in between classes and my phone rang. Sure enough, it was Hope. I didn’t answer and went straight to Google. I wanted this madness to end. I googled her number and some awesome results popped up. Why hadn’t I thought of that before? I have no clue. I literally had never thought of googling her phone number. The number was in a few chat rooms. All of which had the same story. Girl from Texas. Hope Porter. On and on. Her number was tied to some man in Texas, but not with the last name of Porter. The guys in the chat room said they had confronted her about it. She said it was her Uncle. They pushed her further. Finally, she said she was initially doing a project to see if someone could fall in love over the phone. She was supposed to end it after a few months, but after talking with them for a while, she enjoyed it so much that she just kept doing it. Armed with this information, I made the phone call. It was expertly rehearsed. Same script. With who knows how many people. I told her to never call me or text me again. And that was the end. I have yet to hear from her since.
That is a crazy story.

Probably will be a bunch of 'stories' emerging to save face for all the media nerworks and for little goodie two shoes, Notre Dame.

Certainly not. I mean just look at him. His appearance alone just screams "Rhodes Scholar"
