For some college football fans, the first Wednesday in February is akin to a national holiday. It’s national signing day, the first day that recruits can sign a national letter of intent with the program of their choice. Class rankings are assigned. Five-star signees are celebrated. Every head coach meets their recruiting needs, and fans are certain that the new arrivals will carry them to a league or national championship.

Only, it’s not that simple. Sure, a number of highly rated talents turn that promise into production on the field and lead their new teams to glory. But some recruits never live up to high expectations, and others take a bit longer than expected to get on the field and make a significant impact.

There were plenty of those players in the classes of 2014 and 2015. While some of their classmates are off to the NFL or on pace for an early pro entry, they’re at their second schools or struggling to crack the starting lineup.

Here's a look at 10 recent top recruits who could be on their last chance at stardom over the next two years. Recruiting rankings for the classes of 2014 and 2015 were provided by Scout.com.

There's a blurb for each player that's too long to post, but holy shite all of them play, have played and could potentially play in the SEC next season.

Ohio State CB Kendall Sheffield (formerly of Alabama)
Jacksonville State RB Roc Thomas (formerly of Auburn)
Ventura College QB Ricky Town (formerly of Arkansas and one-time Alabama commit)

Impossible. I was just in a thread on the first page that said LSU never has JUCO or grad transfers come in.

To be fair, he hasn't enrolled yet.

Breiden fehoko was a 25 game starter at texas tech...he just wants to go to a better program. He's already proven himself. Hope lsu gets him

The whole "last chance" part seems very over-exaggerated. Many of these players have 2 years of eligibility remaining. Must be the off-season...

Good stuff. I'm interested to see how they do.

Played reasonably well as a Freshman in 2015. Missed half of 2016 with an injury and is still recovering from surgery. Since he will just be a Junior...I don't see how this would be his "Last Chance". It seems more like 2018-19 would be his last chance.

Can only imagine if Aranda was able to coach Garrett. Thanks again, Chavis.

Here are the guys Hand would have had to beat out to start the last few years

- A'Shawn Robinson
- Jarran Reed
- Jonathan Allen
- Dalvin Tomlinson
- DJ Pettway

Kind of stupid

Yea, I thought this was a strange one to include. Unless Baker Mayfield has a serious injury or a massive regression Kyler isn't even going to have a chance at starting this season.

A DT with 2 seasons left is on his last chance? Hell, at DT the junior year is when most make an impact. For KMAC in particular, he's there to take the double teams that free up others to make the plays. He's never going to be a stats king -- that's not his job.

From my understanding, he's doing big things after being moved to the inside. I think part of the issue with him revolved around his attitude his first season. Without the right attitude, physical attributes mean jack. Couple that with being too heavy for his original position, he probably should have been on the inside all along.

But schools were warned by his high school coach, that he had a habit of taking plays off. I think he finally learned you can't do that in big boy football.
