I go back and forth with this. But ultimately, I do think it is a ridiculous concept that a team lost at home, and was rewarded by not having to play an extra game that the team that beat them had to play.

I never said it affected the game. Im just pointing out that a plane crash is indeed tragic.

I think the selection committee got it right - LSU and Alabama were the two best teams in the nation.

However...if the shoe were on the other foot and LSU didn't go to the SECCG and Bama was undefeated, I truly don't believe LSU would have gotten a shot at the rematch. That's the only thing that didn't sit right with me. Maybe it's the LSU/little brother/victim card thing, but I don't think the Tigers would have been given the chance to "restore order."

Except those were he rules of the system, and everyone was subject to them.

It would be funny if Leslie went to Nebraska or somewhere and had their program in the Top 10 in a couple of years.

Maybe Top 25. you think he's going to recruit to Nebraska the same as to LSU? Nebraska is done as a big time program.
they have no built in advantages except fan support

Amazing how they suddenly remembered all the victims at halftime, up 24-7.

They were up 17-7 at the half.

The plane crash probably isn't a great excuse alone, but I think it was a combination of factors including that school tragedy.

The game was in Ames, IA...you had the crash that week, a short week of practice (game was on a Friday), and it was a short week following a trip to Lubbock. Back to back road games, short week, and a tragedy all possibly weighing on those players. Lots of mitigating factors.

Also...this question is something I always bring up when discussing the rematch:

Would Bama have still made the game if the Big XII team in question only had the word Oklahoma on their jerseys rather than Oklahoma followed by State, everything else being equal?

Yes, that plane crash was such a distraction that they jumped out to a 24-7 lead. They must have started dwelling on the tragedy at halftime, huh.
It's called exhaustion, you dumbass.

This. That title is a total fraud imo. They can boast about it, slap on "16" stickers or whatnot, but it's a complete fraud to me.

Much like the 1996 Florida Gators, I don't buy it. Sorry. Spurrier has 0 National Championships to me.

1. There was no selection committee - it was the BCS. 2. The BCS was not setup to match the two best teams but the two most deserving teams.

The BCS got it right that year with the two best teams.

However, in 2012, Alabama should have been forced to play Georgia again in the BCS Championship.

Anyone with half a brain knows Bama deserved to be in the NC against LSU. They were the the 2 heavyweights. Most that say different are disgruntled Bama handed us our arse. Hats off to Saban and Bama...they were prepared, we weren't!

just looking at the starting defenses from both teams, almost all of them went to the NFL.

the 9-6 game convinced Saban he needed to change his philosophy on offense. By the time the NC game came around he had AJ making aggressive first down throws he wouldn't have dreamed of trying against LSU just a few months prior.

He understands you have to constantly reinvent yourself to stay on top, Les never understood that and that's why he's not the LSU coach today.

That's probably the biggest difference between the two bc in his day Les was a very good coach.

pretty much sums it up perfectly. Frustrating to read, but a good post nonetheless.
