Let me set the scene:

Les Miles has a podcast now and his most recent one focuses, at least in some part, on the rematch with Alabama for the BCSNCG. Well the podcast got posted on Reddit and a former player chimed in. Here's a link to the podcast and quotes from the player:

LINK

quote:

Might be a little late, but a fun story about finding out who we were playing:

We were all brought into our big team meeting room where we had ESPN playing on the screen. They were going to announce who we were playing. There were ESPN cameras all over the room, and at Bama and (I assume) OKState. They were to get our reactions. They announced it and I swear you could have heard a pin drop. We all WANTED to play Oklahoma State. But, I remember Miles standing up and basically telling all of us that we were about to be on camera and to get hyped for playing the second best team in the country (or something like that).

So we get a signal from the camera and we all go crazy. Extremely excited, jumping around, clapping, etc. There was about a 30-second delay and we saw our reaction on the big screen. I just remember thinking how interesting it would have been had they just started filming instantly.

Another poster asked his this question:

quote:

This is a rumor I heard years ago and you don't have to comment if you don't want to, but was Lee not played in the last 2 games that season due to grade ineligibility?

His response:

quote:

Rumor. There are too many stories to tell about Lee. He was genuinely the nicest guy there. Most people on that team were pretty shitty or mean people. Lee was the coolest guy. The irony was, I hated watching him in HS before I made it there. Helped him warm up with some passes every few practices and we chatted. Just a really cool guy.

In the hotel, the morning of the game. There was a banner that was hung up that said “Thank you Jarrett Lee.” We were quickly removed from that room. It was a big open hall area where we were going to do walkthroughs, Miles seemed pretty pissed. No one really knows why he didn’t play Lee.

I know Miles has become a meme on here and people love him and some even consider him one of the best coaches alive. I know that I have zero respect for that man. I won’t go into detail but I actually refused to even watch LSU football until he was fired. I am convinced that if we had any other coach who wasn’t so stubborn, we would have won that natty in 2011/12. I held up that deal and only started watching again last season when it seemed like he was going to be fired.

Another response regarding the BCSNCG:

quote:

Halftime was bizarre. I remember suggesting to some people that we come out in a five-wide formation, Lee in at QB and air it out for an entire drive. Even if it was three straight incompletions. Saban doesn’t respond that well to instant change, and that’s why we beat him the first time.

Miles thought the reason we beat him the first time was because Jordan was an athlete and ran the ball a lot and froze the linebackers. The true part of that statement is freezing those big backers. They didn’t know what was happening because they didn’t spend a lot of practice time on it.

By the time the Natty rolled around.... we just decided to do the same exact shite. Expecting Saban wouldn’t be prepared. Boggles my mind to this day.

Seeing the 2007 team celebrate with Miles on Saturday I wonder who this former player could be to hold such a grudge against Les? The 2007 guys all seem to still love him to death.

For every college kid that loves their coach and would do anything for them there are 100 kids who believe the same coach squandered their talents and ruined their careers.

To the tune of 239 total yards

“Those big backers” being slow was the myth that cost LSU the national championship. They came out and ran an option play, and back up LB Jarrell Harris forced the pitch from Jefferson AND ran the running back out of bounds for a loss. LSU’s entire team looked completely mind fricked after that happened. They were done.

Yea, LSU's offense is in no way shape or form the reason LSU beat Alabama the 1st time. 9 pts, 239 yards and 4.1 YPP.

LSU won because they made their kicks and made a few big plays on defense and one on offense in the OT.

Agreed. Oklahoma State was clearly one of the top 2 teams in the country that year. Yep.

I mostly agree with that statement. But let's put it this way...

If you were a player on that 2011 team, sooo close to being national champions, you'd probably be pretty pissed too if you had the impression that your HC did absolutely nothing to try and win that game.

It honestly looked like Miles' offensive game plan was to cross his fingers and hope that Bama turned the ball over deep in their own territory.

the 9-6 game convinced Saban he needed to change his philosophy on offense. By the time the NC game came around he had AJ making aggressive first down throws he wouldn't have dreamed of trying against LSU just a few months prior.

He understands you have to constantly reinvent yourself to stay on top, Les never understood that and that's why he's not the LSU coach today.

That's probably the biggest difference between the two bc in his day Les was a very good coach.

Because he is a great man.......

just not the best game coach. Most level headed LSU fans appreciate the work he did for our university. I certainly do.

No one adapts to environmental change like Saban. The guy is constantly evolving. His evolution morphed into him being able to see the need for change before change is required

Some how none of that is surprising to read. Every intelligent LSU fan knows Les thought the reason we won the first game was Bama couldn't stop Jordan with the read option. Even if that were true which it was only momentarily... Saban literally had several months to adjust.

I remember 4th quarter, 13 or so minutes left. Game isn't really out of reach yet... WR screen right no gain, WR screen left no gain, RB draw no gain, punt. I've never seen a coach quite literally fail to gameplan with a month to do it.

It was fairly obvious we'd dominated that year on talent and talent alone.

Ever since, we've been just slightly north of mediocre. Despite who we hired, Les leaving was absolutely the right call.. just 4 games too late or .75 of a season too early.

I really like those threads on there because it's 100% opposite of the shite talking here. People are pretty respectful and most of them know their football.

You’re confusing statistical dominance with what the anonymous ex-player is claiming. He’s saying they were able to win the game because they ran the option when Saban wasn’t expecting it. It caused Saban to change his own game plan and it didn’t work out to his benefit.

As he pointed out about the “go five wide after halftime” comment - it didn’t matter if it worked or not. Three straight incompletions would have been enough to make Saban uneasy and not respond well to LSU’s 2nd half adjustments.

So even if LSU had still struggled offensively in the 2nd half, doing something to surprise Saban might have made it a football game. I think it was only 7-0 at that point anyway.
