Much has been made of Florida's impending doom on the OL. I agree, that the unit is hurting for depth right now, and will be young at places, but I also want to say that this unit isn't exactly about to start scrub walk-ons during SEC play:

Here is what UF is looking at right now:

Left Tackle:
4* David Sharpe, SO, 6'6, 350 - played in 6 games last year

Left Guard:
3* Andrew Mike, RS-Fr, 6'6, 302 - Can play guard or tackle but they like him better at guard

Center:
3* Trip Thurman, RS-Jr, 6'5, 310 - played in 24 career games, started 10 at LG
3* Cameron Dillard, RS-So, 6'4, 309 - played in 4 games last year - could start at center and Thurman could play at guard again, but I think the coaches like Thurman's experience here

Right Guard:
3* Antonio Riles, RS-So, 6'4, 312 - played in 4 games last year on OL (formerly 3* DE)
3* Travaris Dorsey, RS-Fr, 6'2, 323 - Will be in the 2 deep at guard

Right Tackle:
3* Kavaris Harkless, RS-Fr, 6'5, 292 - probably be the back up once Ivey gets here
5* Martez Ivey, 6'5, 275, FR - will probably start from day 1 depending on what kind of shape he reports in, will certainly be in the rotation

They also have the following guys coming in with the 2015 recruiting class, and probably 2 or 3 will breach the game 1 depth chart: (I ranked them in order of most likely to least likely to get on the field)

3* Frederick Johnson, 6'6, 300 - from south florida - expected to contribute right away
3* Richard Desir-Jones, 6'4, 285 - very athletic and fast - wrestler - high hopes for immediate contribution
3* Brandon Sandifer, 6'4, 335 - will play if he's in shape
3* Tyler Jordan, 6'4, 280 - will probably red shirt if possible
3* Nick Buchanan, 6'4, 280 - will probably red shirt if possible

So this line is younger than last year, but it's not like the line has no experience whatsoever. And there is talent, there won't be walk ons on the field during SEC play barring a total injury disaster. So while UF should be weaker than last year, it's not exactly like the cupboard is bare. I doubt it will be as bad as people think.

I feel much worse about the QB situation, honestly.

When he gains some weight, he will be incredible.

I don't think he's SEC ready right now, though.

Too many freshmen and sophomores in the 2-deep. In retrospect, that Ivey pickup was even bigger than I thought.

Reports right now say he is already 290. The point is, he was the #1 tackle prospect in the country last year. It's not like UF won't have talent.

McElwain will turn you guys around. He did a great job at CSU. Give it time. Be happy that Muschump is gone.

Your OL is in a lot better shape than you all bitched and whined about earlier. Young and inexperienced but not horrible at all.

Florida will still compete, but trying to get anything done on offense without a good OL is just a clusterfrick. McElroy is a good offensive mind, but Florida's offense won't be back until 2016 imo.

Riiiiiight.

Thomas Goldkamp -- UF 247

quote:

Somebody today mentioned to me on Twitter that the offense can't get any worse, which got me to thinking position by position.

QB: Have to think it'll be the same in a vacuum, at least. Now, a vastly inferior OL compared to last year (if that happens) could make the QBs look worse. But materially, you're not gonna get much worse than Driskel was last year or a severely limited Harris.

RB: Could conceivably take a step back, though I think Matt Jones was fairly average. I don't think right now that Lane is an upgrade, which means Scarlett or Cronkrite has to be ready from Day 1 for this spot to be an upgrade. Conservatively probably ends up as a push at best.

WR: You only lose Quinton Dunbar, but I've yet to see someone that can even replace him. Brandon Powell is better and should have played more last year, so that's a definite plus. If Callaway can play early, that's huge and could represent an upgrade. Otherwise, push here at best.

TE: Fairly confident tight end will be better from a receiving standpoint, but a downgrade from a blocking standpoint. Still, that's a big upgrade for me.

OL: Just failing to see any way this line is an upgrade over last year's unit, which was much improved but still exceedingly average by SEC standards. That line had a very good amount of experience returning, this line had almost none. There's exactly one upperclassman and the only two guys that have ever started a game in college have potentially serious injuries. I hate to say it, but barring a bunch of freshmen or second-year players taking major steps forward, this unit is going to take a big step back, and that affects every other unit on offense.

So it's possible this offense could be worse than last year. FWIW, I actually thought Roper did a good job scheming around a relatively poor OL in a one-year timespan. I'd be floored if Florida didn't have an equal amount of short, quick passes in the playbook next year and fans aren't complaining about a lack of intermediate and deep passes again. The Gators just won't have the line for it, particularly when you consider they're losing their best blocking tight ends and best blocking back.

I dont know man. This is all assuming the planets align and the oline doesnt suffer any injuries. After watching UF the last 5 years we are injuryU. The oline situation is one reason I havent counted Harris out of the QB race yet. I just know we are going to have to use his escapability talent/traits at some point.

The point I'm trying to make is that it's not like UF is going to be walking out there with walk ons and stuff.

They have some big and talented players. Just young, especially in the 2nd string.

But it's not like they're expecting multiple first year players to start. Maybe some RS Freshmen, but the starters, outside of Ivey, should all be guys that have been in the program at least 2 years.

Won't be as good as last year - until only gave up 17 sacks last year, but I guess what I'm saying is it won't be epic 2014 Tennessee bad (gave up 42 sacks).

Just happy we have Summers coaching them up. The turnaround we had on the OL last year was unbelievable.

Depth chart just looks extremely young and razor thin, especially if anyone gets hurt.

Now, as I was going to say.

You have (in your two deep):

3 RS Freshmen, & 1 True Freshman...so, 4 of the 8 players listed have never played a single down in a college game...that is still a bit of an unknown.

Of the other 4 players...1 Sophomore that played in 6 games last year, zero starts. 2 RS-Sophomores that each played in 4 games last year (each played against Eastern Michigan, Georgia, Kentucky and Vanderbilt)...zero starts between the two. 1 RS Junior who has started 10 games at guard, but is currently listed at center. The only player of the 8 with any starting experience.

They may surprise people by the end of the season...but early on, it could be brutal if they don't gel. They do have good size...but, as mentioned before, only 1 has starting experience and zero have every played a single snap with the offense that Florida is rolling out this season.
