The general consensus seems to be that Dareus is a better, more consistent player than Fairley. I understand that the common perception is that Fairley takes plays off, is a one-year wonder, etc. and that Dareus has been a solid performer throughout his career at Alabama. I also realize that Dareus played in a 3-4 scheme while Fairley played in a 4-3, which can be attributed to some of the productivity differential. However, Dareus frequently played defensive end while Chapman played the DT spot most of last year, as Cody did the year before. There have been plenty of ends in a 3-4 scheme with much better production than Dareus.

My question is, based on production, how can people objectively come to this conclusion? In his entire career (2 years)at Alabama, Dareus had 66 total tackles, 11 sacks and 20 tackles for loss. In 2010 alone, Fairley had 56 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and 24 tackles for loss. Even in 2009, when Fairley was supposedly a non-factor, he had 28 tackles, which is 5 less than Dareus had in each of his two seasons at Alabama. That's quite a discrepancy in productivity, no matter the scheme. Simply watch the games and see who was the bigger difference-maker. Without Fairley up front, Auburn does not win the national championship, even with Newton. One could argue that he was Newton's equal on the opposite side of the ball in game-changing ability. Can anything remotely close to the same be said for Dareus? Again, it's not really a knock on Dareus because I do think he's a good player, but can you think of a time when you saw Dareus (other than knocking McCoy out of the NC game) and said, "Wow, that guy's a game-changer"? Was there ever really a debate last year that Fairley was the best DT in the country, or any conversation during Dareus' career about him being the best player on the field?

Can Bama fans honestly say they were not frustrated with Dareus' consistency last year? I have several friends that I watched games with that complained of Dareus not playing hard enough and being the disruptive force that he should have been. I realize he was banged up, but Fairley suffered from a shoulder injury during the season as well. Yet, we hear criticism of Fairley for taking plays off and only doing it in one year. When has Dareus ever really gotten it done? Dareus may be 20 pounds heavier than Fairley, but can that really account for this level of statistical variance? Reasonable minds may disagree, but I fail to see the logic here.

Does it really matter to you that much that Dareus is looked at as better the better talent and pro?

Dont make me pull out Iron Bowl videos.

Dareus may make a better pro player than Fairley. But in college,

Nick>Marcel

The rest is to be continued.

Not really, just confused as to how he can be viewed in that way considering he has never done anything in college to deserve that label.

I don't care about any of that, and the whole reason I posted that youtube is because I like it. I don't give two shits about pro ball. So if Nick actually is better than Marcell...it really doesn't matter to me.

3,800 pounds of force is badass, though.

Fairly is a douchebag. I hope he tries dumping Brees or spearing him in the back at the Superdome.

I figured that "I don't give enough of a shite to read everything you took the time to write" would come off poorly. "tl;dr" seemed the nice thing to do. You seem to be interested in this stuff...just trying to not be a dick.

In your eyes he hasn't, he's not considered a top 3 pick for no reason...

Its obvious though that they are being labeled by what they believe these guys can do in the pros and not by what they did in College. If they only used the college experience, then Fairley would certainly be ahead of Dareus. When it comes down to it, Fairley was unblock able this year. Even when double teamed.

Dareus had a normal year and only played well in spurts.

Its obvious that someone thinks Dareus can be coached up to use his physical ability in the NFL.

I guess that makes you not interested in this stuff, even though you bothered to respond to my thread anyway? If you don't want to be a dick and say you don't care, don't bother replying to my thread.

Understandable, but in what way is he more physically talented than Fairley other than 20 pounds heavier? If Fairley takes plays off, when was Dareus truly on? The stats just aren't there for him. Both McCoy and Suh had much better numbers and were top 5 picks last year, the same range a guy with 66 total tackles in two years is projected to go. At least Fairley proved that he could be a dominant force against the best competition. I remember the coachability traits that Vernon Gholston seemed to have as well.

Dareus was considered a top 5 pick based on performance before the NC game by both Kiper and McShay.

Fairley plays the glamor position in the same scheme Warren Sapp did under Monte Kiffin(Chizik was one of the 1st college coaches to successfully adapt the Tampa 2 to the college game).

Dareus plays a position that is 2nd fiddle to the LBs, 3 sacks a season is the norm for a DE. He's suppose to take on blockers and create a push so LBs can make the play, not rack up sacks( opposed to Fairley, whose job is to penetrate the C-G gap).

If you don't think Dareus performed well as a 3-4 DE, you don't know football...
