While in Destin on Wednesday afternoon, Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin told Clay Travis on 104.5 The Zone that he evaluates the appearance of coaches' wives during the interview process.

quote:

Franklin, in a relaxed mood near the beach, explained, "I've been saying it for a long time, I will not hire an assistant until I see his wife. If she looks the part and she's a D1 recruit, then you got a chance to get hired. That's part of the deal. There's a very strong correlation between having the confidence, going up and talking to a women, and being quick on your feet and having some personality and confidence and being articulate and confident, than it is walking into a high school and recruiting a kid and selling him."

It's a shame more people in Nashville don't support Franklin and Vandy. I think James Franklin may be one of the best young minds in football.

That dude is awesome, but will get blasted for this I bet.

I keep wanting to run into him in Nashville and get drunk with him. Supposedly he is out and about a whole lot.

Whoa.

Vandy has gotten behind Franklin and this football program more than any time in recent memory. Nashville is REALLY coming around on Vandy football and they love Franklin.

ETA:

they have raised a bunch of money for facility upgrades and such I believe.

Yea but the mothers of D1 recruits who are not D1 in looks are not going to want their kids playing for someone who hires coaches based on how hot their wives are. That's a strategy you keep to yourself, not blabbing it drunk on a beach to a gossip queen like Clay Travis.

not based on that comment. i had a sales mgr once that believed the same thing. "if you can't pick up chics, you can't sell yourself". that's unmitigated bull shite. some men are happily married and don't want to run the risks of picking up women. also, if there wife is ugly to him, that makes them a bad coach. simply put, people that prejudge others like that generally don't make good long term professionals unless their other strengths greatly outweigh that glaring weakness. lastly, getting assts to coach at vandy can't be that easy anyway.

Franklin recently found inspiration from the movie, "Moneyball." He said, "Moneyball was talking directly to me."

He must not have been understanding the concept of moneyball. The quote about the ugly girlfriend in moneyball was one of the reasons Brad Pitt fired the scout. The idea is to get the best coaches and players possible, not evaluate talent based solely on stupid things like their girlfriends and how big the QB's hands are. Franklin was probably drunk.

I have a hot gf that I'll probably marry one day, but I am the worst salesman ever. (I do sales currently too).

I just can't sell something I don't believe in.

I don't really have a problem with Franklin, but I do have a problem with Clay Travis. Sounds like they're two peas in a pod.

I like him.

While I do think he will leave for a better program eventually... I dont think it will be until he wins something big at Vandy.

He got some legit playmakers in the recent signing class. I think soon enough he will be winning a few games that he should not be winning.

I clicked on this thread thinking I was going to read about the best quarterback in the SEC - James Franklin, Mizzou's quarterback. And then I was saddened and dismayed that I wasted my time reading about a crappy coach at a crappy football school. Now, I'm frustrated that I wasted my time typing out my reaction to this thread.
