Supposedly, there are six teams in the SEC that have dominated the conference in football. Well, listed below are the first six teams to win an SEC football title--the charter members of the "Big 6," if you will.

Alabama (1933, '34, '37)
Tulane (1934, '39)
LSU (1935, '36)
Tennessee (1938, '39, '40)
Georgia Tech (1939)
Mississippi State (1941)

Most of the same teams have played in the same conference since 1892. The conference just had a different name and a few teams have come and gone. Why not go back that far?

Because there was no such thing as a forward pass back then.

Princeton won most of the first collegiate national championships.
Times change.

I can certainly understand, however, why several of the schools in the OP would choose to use "charter member" synonymously with "big," rather than to use current/recent success.

Since we're talking about ancient things ...

Who has more National Championships?

Big 6 in the SEC or Yale, Princeton and Harvard?

For some reason I thought Ole Miss would be up there before Mississippi State. I need to look more into Mississippi State football.

The current Big 6 is UT, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, and LSU. Texas A&M will unseat either Auburn or LSU. I'm going to say it's LSU. We get every 5 star out of New Orleans we want, I just don't know how they keep the talent level up now that we are in the league.

Newsflash, LSU is not your rival. You don't have to reference them to make yourself feel better about posting some bullshite. Just take your rightful place and be happy to finish 4th in the West every season.

and just like 2011, Bama won the national championship that year without winning the conference.

It started out as the 6 teams that won the SEC in the 80's and evolved into the teams that have won an SECCG.
