Europeans are freaking out over a town of 40,000 hosting a Euro match

The general question over there is how can a town of 40,000 host 50,000 people for a soccer match?

There are several Power 5 universities located in towns under 40k. Hell, Auburn isn't much bigger and they host twice the 50,000 7 times a year. Europeans are weird.

I think that the underlying issue is the Russian gangsters who are coming in and beating the piss out of everyone they see (specifically English fans). They probably don't have the same type of law enforcement infrastructure or experience that a college town used to dealing with giant SEC games would, and this is a threat that the SEC hasn't ever had.

If that hadn't happened I doubt this concern would exist.

Whenever Ole Miss has a home game, there are at least twice as many people in the stadium than the population of the town, unless Oxford has grown tremendously since the last time I heard their population. And they manage.

Tree killing aside college football fans are gigantic pussies compared to soccer hooligans

And if by pvssies you mean normal, non-miserable/deranged/idiotic/unhinged idiots, then yes I agree.

And this is even above and beyond that. These Russians aren't even hooligans, they are straight up roving bands of vicious gangsters using soccer as a reason to do their thing.

This is the real issue. The fricks who beat the shite out of each other before and after the matches.

It's a little funny how soccer players tend to be the softest, yet their fans tend to be the most violent.

Talladega, Alabama is a town with a population of less than 17,000 people and they have handled the influx of 200,000 additional people, twice a year, for the NASCAR races exceptionally well.

No one wants to go to Starkville for a college football playoff game, either.

Yeah, the problem would be the same if Auburn or Oxford were hosting one of the Euro matches and had the same traveling "supporters."

That there's only a couple of "strips" of bars that everyone will be centered around means all the opposing fans and troublemakers packed even more closely together.

Add to that: this location in France is much easier to get to for England hooligans who have "travel bans" than Marseilles.

One other thing, most of this is started by the Russians but there's also a good reason the English are targets (and willing participants).
They've traditionally been the worst hooligans in Europe.

There's not a city in Europe that doesn't despise "England Away" fans and have horror stories about the time they came.
Like in Marseilles (where England hooligans rioted in 1998), local ultras and hooligans count the minutes to payback the English and a good part of English traveling fans are looking for exactly that as well. That's why they get attacked everywhere.

Of course there wouldn't be a
lot of people in Oxford. Most people don't want to live in an area which is that fat, poor, racist or stupid.
