ESPN says Chavis is a Defensive Mastermind

quote:

In a world where coaches chase jobs the way most neighborhood dogs chase the ice cream truck, Chavis is the refreshing exception. He has been the quintessential grinder, coaching at just three schools since he returned to his alma mater, Tennessee, in 1989 as a defensive line coach.

It's not like he hasn't had chances to move around, either. He has turned down job interviews for head coaching gigs as well NFL opportunities in the past. And, had it not been for his distrust of the LSU administration and his suspicion that Les Miles would eventually be forced out, Chavis probably never would have left LSU.

"Coach Miles is a good man and good coach. He was never the reason I left there," Chavis said.

So here he is at Texas A&M, a year and a half into one of his greatest challenges yet -- of resurrecting an Aggie defense that was beaten down, beaten up and floundering near the bottom of the SEC in most defensive categories when Chavis arrived prior to the 2015 season.

"They are tied for second nationally in forced turnovers (17), third in tackles for loss (58), fourth in red zone defense (11 touchdowns in 26 red zone attempts), 13th in sacks (20), 22nd in scoring defense (19.2 points per game) and 28th in third-down defense (.340)."

Yeah we give up yards, but we don't give up points easily.

I know the rant is about 90% trolling. But put trolling aside. This is about recognizing greatness. It's remarkable what Chavis has done. We were beyond terrible when he got here. Yes, we're still giving up too many yards. But we're tough, we don't give up many points, we get about a million tackles for loss, and we force turnovers.

The man is a genius.

He's certainly much better than whoever the Aggies had before.

Both teams are better off now, so it's confusing why there is so much argument over this.

Agreed. Pretty safe to say both teams are very happy with their current DCs.

He won't allow half of that to LSU unless you break a long one in garbage time. Ags by 2 scores easily.

Let's see how they hold up tomorrow against Bamas running game. Lord knows that's the weakness and Bama and LSU have a much better running game than UT.

All this will be for not once Alabama goes for 600 yards against this great Defense. This game wont even be close. bama 42- ag 16. I do like A&M's QB though so bama 42- 23 .

6-0, which is better than you predicted preseason.

So you probably aren't a good judge of where we are today.

This. Chavis is a very good coach.

LSU fans have an issue with how he left and the performance in his last game
