Creating demand and ratings are vital long-term.
Sure but the SEC already has enough big games to do that. When you look at the numbers you see 50% of the top 10 highest rated games last year involved the SEC. It is a huge gap between the SEC and the rest of the country already. There is the concept of overexposure to think about.

If that is all that matters then tell me why the SEC didn't just get OU and Texas last time?

From ESPN's perspective, it would facilitate moving VT/NCST from the ACC to the SEC so that ESPN could have two conference TV networks in the high population states of Virginia and North Carolina, instead of just one (future ACC Network).
Conversely, they have to pay out to 2 sets of NC/VA schools an amount comensurate with those states... so they're paying markup for those 2 states twice instead of once.

Using this logic, then ESPN would facilitate moving Vandy, Auburn, and MS St to the ACC.
You are a newcomer so I will cut you some slack. Charter schools are untouchable!

but for the SEC to raid the ACC would be out of character and kill the ACC
I really don't think taking VPI and NC St. would kill the ACC. Especially if ND becomes a full member in that timeframe.

UNC
UNC is to the ACC what Texas is to the Big 12. They aren't going anywhere.
Plus they think everyone in the SEC is stupid (except Vandy).

The Tier 1 deal got increased by the amount needed for the same split last expansion. The SEC Network generates additional revenue that isn't out of ESPN's pocket. The extra double payout doesn't really exist.

Well, to be honest, Texas never wanted the SEC when they had the power.
Now that they see the light (schedule, interest, recruiting, prestige, final four, etc.), they may be open to the premier conference in America.

VA Tech has won the most conference titles since joining ACC and played in another 2 title games.
NC State is the best program in NC.
You would take away two of our largest stadium / passionate football fanbases and leave us to replace it with programs like UConn and Cincy.
but it wouldn't hurt. lol

Frank Beamer = wants no part of SEC

It would hurt just like losing the DC market hurt. The ACC will survive.

Nice post .... well stated.
I've been saying the exact same thing, in fewer words, for years.
I know for a fact plenty of big time NC St alumnus want-in ... they'll keep trying until they die, but the ACC is going to continue to shoot it all down.

dc market doesn't care about college sports in general. it is all redskins, ravens, steelers up there
the new ACC is still a young conference. seems prudent to give it a few decades and see what happens. be silly to break up all these rivalries for a little more money from tv

I know the Texas A&M and Missouri fans are all rustled about OU and Utx talk but don't play into it. Staying at 14 is the best mantra and encouraging any ACC raid discussion is counterproductive to what is best for the south and the ACC / SEC specifically.
Several powerful alumni and politicians wanted VPI to be #14 when the SEC added TAMU as #13. There is a reason this did not happen then, and there is a reason this should not happen now. Don't play into the traps set by B12 and B1G bloggers and stay with the company line. "14 is fine"

Anecdote, but all the NC State folks I have spoke with want to stay in the ACC and continue playing UNC and Duke.

I can see that.

As long as Coach K is alive you won't get Duke, UNC, UVA, or NC State. he was so pissed when Maryland left. he really likes ACC and is a influential voice on other schools
I think VA tech likes being in conference with UVA and much of their out students come from DC metro, Maryland and northern states and they have no interest in playing Alabama and ms schools.
