Has a lot to do with scheduling OOC opponents with a pulse early in the season.
Fla. State, USCw, Wisconsin, UCLA, and Clemson are all week 1 opponents in the west. Not to mention Arky playing TCU in week 2.

From the look of it, State is the only one in the west without a decent OOC on their schedule. The SOS here reflects that.

Florida plays FSU
UGA plays UNC and Ga Tech
UT plays Va Tech
South Carolina plays ECU and Clemson
Kentucky plays at Louisville
Vandy plays Ga Tech
Missouri plays at West Virginia

These SOS rankings are based mainly on who teams are playing within the SEC. The SEC West is supposed to be much stronger than the East. The West teams all play each other, so their SOS ranking will be higher

I don't know. All four of their road SEC games are against good teams. But to be honest, there isn't a lot of difference between the 5th hardest and 10th hardest schedule

I don't understand how Auburn's schedule is near the bottom in the West considering AU opens with presumably #1 Clemson, plays at MSU/Ole Miss/UGA/Bama, and has a "solid" cupcake in Arky State . I suppose having the Vanderbilt draw? But then again, Ole Miss also plays Vandy, Georgia Southern, and Wofford.

strength-of-schedule ranks for SEC teams:

The small print at the bottom states that the schedule ranks are from the perspective of an average team. Schedule difficulty may be far different from the perspective of a very good team.

If you are supposedly an "average" team, say ranked 64th out of 128, and you play a schedule of all teams ranked in the 40s and 50s, then you will be projected to have a losing record. But if you play a schedule of four teams in the top five and eight teams in bottom 20, then you are projected to go 8-4, so the latter schedule could be said to be weaker.

But if you are a top five team, the latter schedule presents four realistic chances at a loss while the former presents really none, so the former schedule would be weaker.

So, you can't validly rank the schedules of a very good team like, say, Alabama or LSU, and an average team like, say, Texas A&M or Vanderbilt, according to the same criteria.

The SEC needs to play more OOC to prove their mettle

We have one of the easiest schedules we've had since I can remember. Absolutely no excuses this year.

How is Auburn at the *near* bottom of the SEC West, when everyone else has to play Auburn?

Is their OOC schedule really that weak?
