Sweet! I can go full on Roku

I assume this would include all of the ESPN networks, including the SEC-N.
If it ever drops to $10-12 a month, Buh-Bye cable.

Sling TV, a new web-TV service offered by Dish Network, will allow subscribers to stream ESPN through the internet as part of a $20 per month package, Peter Kafka at Re/code reports.
Dish says the service will be available soon and will come with 10 other non-ESPN channels, including TNT, TBS, CNN, Food Network and Cartoon Network.
ESPN's current WatchESPN service requires viewers to receive ESPN as part of their TV package.
The new service, according to Kafka, will appeal to those who want to watch cable television – sports broadcasts in particular – but do not want to remain tethered to standard cable TV subscription bundles. In October, HBO made a similar announcement that it would makes its HBO Go service available as a standalone product.

The deal does come with some stipulations. Sling TV will be a "personal subscription service," meaning it can only be used on a a single device at a time, unlike other services like Netflix. For users who want to watch it on a regular television instead of a computer or tablet, a device that connects web TV to televisions, such as a Roku box, will be required.
Local broadcast stations and the broadcast networks will not be available. Nor will Apple TV be included, though Kafka writes that Apple TV users will be able to "mirror" the stream from their iPhone or iPad to their set top.

I would be interested to know if multiple devices (from different IP addresses) would be allowed to stream at the same time. In other words, can people go in together and split the cost?
ETA: Guess that answers that.

TV "a la carte" is a real thing.

Well, you're still buying packages. It's just a much smaller package w/ a good bit of the filler tossed out. Disney is never going to let you just get ESPN by itself, but something like this is much better than the status quo.

No mention of SEC Network, SEC Network+, ESPNU, ESPNNews, etc.

frick yes. I hate having cable with 800 channels when I only watch about 3 and don't watch much tv in general. It's about time this is offered.

That channel line-up for $20 is a non-starter.

It's not far off, though, imo. You add in Disney channel, the other ESPN channels and SEC network and I just saved $60/month.
But for that price, yeah, and those channels, it's a no-Go.

You mean Dish Network, not ESPN. $20 and you get one connection.

Awesome news
Maybe. It could also mean the end of net neutrality.
What motive does the cable company have to help you stream ESPN so you can pay them less money for your overall service package?
None whatsoever.
Anyone who gets this package shouldn't be surprised if it is throttled at 480p, or if there is an extra monthly charge to pay an access fee on the cable company side.

it's already throttled at 640 I believe, the online stream is good for smaller devices/screens, I agree the modern HD (1k plus) will most likely be the dividing line.

My next question is will you have to do a yearly contract thing?
Cheapskates like me would probably prefer to just pay $20 a month during football/basketball season then ditch it from April-August.
Hopefully it's like Netflix's month to month model.
